DeMeco Ryans: 49ers will have more aggressive, attacking defense

Jun 3, 2021 at 4:40 AM--

The 49ers were strong enough on defense over the last few years that defensive coordinator Robert Saleh became a hot head coaching candidate and then the head coach of the Jets. Staying the course would seem to be a good goal for his successor, but DeMeco Ryans is setting his sights a bit differently. Ryans, [more]

Better Rivals: DeMeco Ryans and the 49ers defense is doing a phenomenal job

By Marc Adams

If defense still wins championships, fans of the San Francisco 49ers must have been teeming with anxiety over the thought of having to rely on the defense, as they have been able to, in recent years. It has stressed me out. But you can rest easy, San Francisco fans, the tide may be turning. Through the first four games of the season, the 49ers defense looked a little Jekyll and Hyde. There were moments in each of those games where the defense looked like the dominant unit we have grown accustomed to seeing. But there were also moments in which they looked lost (see Rodgers, Aaron). The game against Green Bay was the low point, letting the Packers kick a game-winning field goal, even though they had no timeouts and only 37 seconds left. If the first four

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to play the Arizona Cardinals this weekend. Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel spoke with reporters after today's practice. Here is everything they had to say. Transcript provided by the San Francisco 49ers Communications staff. Defensive Coordinator DeMeco Ryans CB Josh Norman was out of that blue Jersey today. How is he feeling and how has he looked at practice this week? "Yeah, he's still progressing, going through to get ready. He still has a few important days coming up here. We'll see how it goes. See where he is for the game." You've studied Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray enough over the last couple of

Steve Young on 49ers' Trey Lance: 'I came away wanting to see more'

Hall-of-Famer and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Steve Young, was a guest Thursday morning on KNBR radio. He spoke about Trey Lance's performance against the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday. Lance entered the game at quarterback at the beginning of the second half due to a calf injury sustained by starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Young is among some of the former 49ers who have been vocal in their belief that the 49ers, at minimum, need to give Lance more playing time. This Sunday, Lance will likely make his first start in Arizona against the 4-0 Cardinals. In reference to what he saw from the rookie quarterback on Sunday, Young said, "Watching Trey throughout the game, it reminded me of my Tampa Bay days. He has a much better team with him right now than I did,

Joe Staley: Jimmy Garoppolo will start, but 49ers are more exciting with Trey Lance

By Marc Adams

Former San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle, Joe Staley, went on KNBR Radio on Monday to discuss the 49ers' loss to the Arizona Cardinals. As expected, the conversation went to the quarterback situation with Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, including who Staley believed would be under center in two weeks when the 49ers play the Indianapolis Colts. "I think he made his decision before the season even started," Staley said on the Papa & Lund show. "If Jimmy's healthy, he's going to be our quarterback this year. They want to use it as a red-shirt year, almost, for Trey this season. I was encouraged." That seemed to be the plan in the offseason, to have Lance sit and learn. Even after the game on Sunday, Kyle Shanahan continued to hold his ground that
