Trey Lance took four snaps on Sunday against the Detroit Lions. One of those snaps featured the rookie quarterback's only pass and his first touchdown pass — a five-yard strike to wide receiver Trent Sherfield. Lance had replaced starter Jimmy Garoppolo on the drive. Maybe Garoppolo would have added that touchdown to his stats had he remained in the game. What was the veteran's reaction to seeing his eventual successor throw his first NFL touchdown? Garoppolo was among the first to celebrate with Lance on the sideline after the play. During the broadcast, Mark Sanchez, one of the FOX announcers calling the game, commented on the potential awkwardness of celebrating your young successor's accomplishment. "That's not an easy hug to give," Sanchez

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk needs 'to be a lot better' than Trent Sherfield to earn more playing time

The 49ers have a conundrum on their hands. At least it seems so, with the constant hesitancy around Brandon Aiyuk from head coach Kyle Shanahan. Brandon Aiyuk was the 49ers' promising 1st-round pick from just a year ago, catching sixty passes for 748 yards and seven combined touchdowns while starting only 11 games, being an explosive piece in both the run and pass game. However, this past Sunday, when the 49ers opened their season against the Detroit Lions, Aiyuk was not involved in either aspect, catching no passes and getting no rushes, which raised eyes about the 49ers' offensive game plan. While Aiyuk nursed a hamstring injury throughout the offseason, there was optimism that the second-year receiver would return and play a prominent role as the

Much has been discussed about the San Francisco 49ers' injuries at running back. On the defensive side of the football, the cornerback group has been impacted by injuries too. Emmanuel Moseley (knee) has yet to be active for a game this season. In addition, the team lost Jason Verrett for the season to a torn ACL. This past Sunday, against the Philadelphia Eagles, the 49ers started Josh Norman and Deommodore Lenoir at cornerback. The hope is that Moseley will return to the lineup this weekend against the Green Bay Packers. Head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR this afternoon and was asked about his cornerback situation leading into Week 3. Should Moseley return to the field, who starts opposite him? Norman or Lenoir? "We won't decide that until

Schefter insists Patriots' interest in Mac Jones influenced 49ers trading up to No. 3

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have insisted that the San Francisco 49ers were interested in Trey Lance since they started scouting this year's rookie quarterback class. For Shanahan, that process started in January after last season ended. The 49ers traded up to the No. 3 overall pick and eventually selected Lance despite most in the media and around the league believing that the target was Mac Jones of Alabama. The 49ers insist that Lance was always the player to beat in their minds. He was the one for whom they made the trade. ESPN's Adam Schefter disputed that
