Jimmy Garoppolo heads into the 2021 season as the San Francisco 49ers' starter. The plan is for him to be the starter for most of the — if not the entire — season, allowing rookie quarterback Trey Lance the luxury of using the time to sit, learn, and master head coach Kyle Shanahan's playbook. Lance is said to be a fast learner, though, so he may be ready to take over Garoppolo's role at some point in the near future.

Garoppolo is 24-9 as the 49ers' starting quarterback. That includes the team's Super Bowl run during the 2019 season. When he's been on the field, the veteran signal-caller has proven to be a winner. So why the move to trade up and draft an eventual replacement?

Garoppolo has also missed 23 games over the last three seasons, which is nearly the same amount of regular-season starts he's made. The quarterback missed most of 2018 after suffering a torn ACL and 10 games last season due to ankle injuries.

Pro Football Focus recently ranked all 32 NFL starting quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sit at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Where does Garoppolo rank? You have to scroll all the way down to No. 22, passing quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins, Daniel Jones, and even rookie Trevor Lawrence to get there.

"Injuries have become the story for Garoppolo, as he has started [about] 50% of the 49ers' games since the beginning of the 2018 season," wrote Bruce Gradkowski. "He did manage to lead the Niners to a Super Bowl appearance the year he came back from his torn ACL. Things are different now, as he has Trey Lance waiting in the wings in case he is either injured or shows a stretch of inconsistency.

"Garoppolo has shown he's capable of executing Shanahan's offense at a high level, but he tends to make a few questionable decisions or throws per game. Lance did a phenomenal job of protecting the football in college. It will be interesting to see how this plays out — expect Garoppolo to have a good year even under such pressure."

Maybe having Lance behind him will further motivate Garoppolo this season, keep him on the field, and improve his production. That would create a tough decision for San Francisco after this season, especially if the rookie proves to have a solid grasp of the offense. Choosing between two capable quarterbacks is a nice problem for any NFL team to have.

Pro Football Focus also ranked the top running backs in the league. However, no 49ers running back, not even starter Raheem Mostert, made the list.

By David Bonilla
Mar 22

The San Francisco 49ers have primarily focused on bolstering their defense in free agency. This has included a significant overhaul of the team's defensive front, with notable departures such as Arik Armstead, Chase Young, and Clelin Ferrell. However, the 49ers managed to reinforce their defensive line with key signings, including Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos, and Jordan Elliott. Additionally, they traded for Maliek Collins to help along the interior. Pro Football Focus recently analyzed the pros and cons of each team's free-agent acquisitions, indicating that San Francisco isn't expected to take a step back when it comes to rushing the passer. "Despite losing Arik Armstead and Chase Young,

PFF mock draft has 49ers finding potential replacement for Colton McKivitz

By David Bonilla
Mar 23

Pro Football Focus' Trevor Sikkema unveiled his latest mock draft this week and has the San Francisco 49ers addressing the offensive line. Specifically, Sikkema suggests the team seeks a potential replacement for Colton McKivitz at right tackle. In Sikkema's projection, the Niners select former Georgia offensive lineman Amarius Mims with the No. 31 overall pick. The analyst views him as an ideal addition to an offensive front that was untouched in free agency—apart from ensuring continuity among last season's starters. "Mims has one of the craziest builds you will have ever seen — in a good way

The San Francisco 49ers focused on defense in free agency but still have several needs heading into the 2024 NFL Draft. The team did not address the offensive line, and it's a safe bet they will do so with some rookie selections next month. The Niners could also continue bolstering things on the defensive side of the football. Adding to the defensive back, defensive line, or linebacker groups remains possibilities. Pro Football Focus analyst Brad Spielberger released his latest mock draft and doesn't have the 49ers drafting at any of those positions. Instead, he has the team adding a bit of an insurance policy on offense, drafting former Georgia wide receiver

49ers mailbag: What is Brandon Staley's role with the defense? Will SF add a starting safety? Thoughts on new hip-drop tackle rule?

By Marc Adams
Mar 27

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Tuesday at the NFL meetings in Orlando. He addressed multiple topics, from coaching moves, to new rules, to free agency additions and losses. On Monday, GM John Lynch met with the media and answered questions himself. So they have given us some things to discuss during the offseason. We opened the 49ers Webzone Mailbag this week to answer your questions. Some were related to the topics Shanahan and Lynch discussed. Others were not. Let's jump in and see what is on your mind. Do the 49ers add a starting safety? Who would be the best fit, and is Talanoa Hufanga's job safe? - Dave B. It wouldn't surprise me if the 49ers added another safety in free agency. In fact, I'd say it's
