Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the San Francisco 49ers roster. There was some doubt whether or not that would be the case. Reports surfaced that the team might look to trade the quarterback before or during the 2021 NFL Draft.

The 49ers drafted Garoppolo's eventual replacement on Thursday night, selecting Trey Lance of North Dakota State with the No. 3 overall pick. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has repeatedly stated that Garoppolo remains in the 49ers' plans for the upcoming season and is slated to be the team's starter. That will allow the incoming rookie the luxury of sitting and learning behind Garoppolo.

Some might assume the drafting of Lance might lead to some awkwardness in the 49ers' quarterbacks room. After all, Garoppolo is not far removed from helping guide San Francisco to a Super Bowl. Naturally, the situation led to a reporter asking Shanahan about his veteran quarterback.

"Jimmy's situation is, if he isn't here on Sunday, I would be disappointed because Jimmy is a quarterback who has played one year, and took us to a Super Bowl, and played at a very high level," Shanahan said after drafting Lance. "He's had some unfortunate injuries, but I believe in Jimmy as a person, and he's shown what he can do on tape.

"It's obvious what I hope and what I believe with this guy coming in, but it would be a very tough situation if Jimmy's not on our team. I want Jimmy to be here, and I want this kid to be brought along. I want to see how he does. And if it turns into a competition, it turns into a competition. I'd be excited about that, if he showed he was ready for it and stuff. But we know where Jimmy is at.

"[Lance] hasn't played football in a year. He hasn't been to an OTA. I'd love to get him out here. It would be very hard for me to picture a situation (where) Jimmy's not here on Sunday because that would be, I think, very stressful for us because Jimmy's a very good player, and I think we can win with him. So, we'll play that by ear, but I expect Jimmy to be here, and I'd be surprised if he wasn't."

Lance spoke virtually with reporters from Cleveland, Ohio, after being drafted and expressed his excitement to work with Garoppolo and the 49ers' other quarterbacks.

"Right now, I'm just focused on getting there, learning as much as I possibly can, getting to know Jimmy and the guys in the room, and learning, getting to know him, becoming close with him," Lance said. "And like I said, just learning as much as I can. And at that point, obviously competing."

"Thank God for Mr. Irrelevant": John Lynch reflects on 49ers drafting Trey Lance

By David Bonilla
Apr 22

The decision to trade up in the 2021 NFL Draft and select quarterback Trey Lance could have had significant consequences for general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. With the team lacking first-round picks in the last two drafts due to this move, and Lance no longer on the roster after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys before last season, it's clear the gamble didn't unfold as expected. Lynch held his annual pre-draft press conference on Monday, reflecting on the decision to take such a big chance on Lance. While such a bold move might have jeopardized jobs elsewhere, Lynch and Shanahan were blessed with some good fortune in the 2022 NFL Draft. Acknowledging the support of the team's ownership, Lynch stated, "They believe in Kyle and I, and our

Former NFL WR: Brandon Aiyuk told me he doesn't want to leave 49ers

Former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh claims to have recently spoken to Brandon Aiyuk, stating that the star player has no desire to leave the San Francisco 49ers. Aiyuk and the 49ers are currently negotiating a contract extension, aiming to finalize a new deal. Of course, that hasn't prevented significant media speculation surrounding Aiyuk's future, with many wondering if the delay might hint at a potential trade. Well-informed 49ers fans know that the team typically finalizes its significant contract extensions closer to training camp, as seen with George Kittle in 2020, Fred Warner in 2021, and Deebo Samuel in 2022. Last year, negotiations with Nick Bosa concluded just days before Week

ESPN recently conducted a mock draft involving its NFL Nation reporters, where each assumed the general manager role for the team they cover. This unique process benefits from selectors who are intimately aware of each team's needs. The San Francisco 49ers are expected to address their offensive line with the No. 31 overall pick, marking the team's first first-round selection since 2021. Nick Wagoner, acting as general manager John Lynch, had to adapt his plan based on earlier selections taking several offensive tackles off draft boards. With those options gone, Wagoner opted for former Missouri pass rusher Darius

Silver: New 49ers intel reveals potential Brandon Aiyuk trade still in play

By David Bonilla
Apr 23

When asked about the possibility of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk not being on the San Francisco 49ers roster on Friday morning, general manager John Lynch responded, "I wouldn't anticipate that." Lynch assured reporters that signing Aiyuk to a long-term extension is a priority, stating, "And our wish is that he's here and a part of the Niners for the rest of his career. We're working through that." While Lynch didn't elaborate on the conversations occurring behind closed doors, Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that a potential trade remains a
