Shanahan: Injury issues and Trent Sherfield's emergence led to lack of time for 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk vs Lions

By Kirk Larrabee
Sep 12

Brandon Aiyuk's lack of playing time at wide receiver was one of the biggest surprises for the 49ers in their 41-33 Week 1 win over the Detroit Lions, and it may or may not continue to be an issue to keep an eye on in the weeks to come. Aiyuk was impressive as a rookie last season (60 receptions for 748 yards and five touchdowns) after being selected in Round 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Arizona State and was thought by many to be a candidate to take an even bigger step this season. But his playing time in the 49ers' season opener was limited as he had zero targets on offense while returning one punt for seven yards. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke after the game about Aiyuk's lack of participation, saying that a recent hamstring injury was part of the

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings wasn't exactly the first option on the play where he caught his first NFL touchdown in Sunday's 17-11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, but when the ball came his way, he made his opportunity count. Jennings' catch, which was also the first catch of his NFL career, came on an 11-yard pass from Jimmy Garoppolo to give the 49ers a 7-3 lead over the Eagles right before halftime. The 49ers had struggled on offense throughout a good portion of the first half, but they found momentum after their defense forced a turnover on downs on a goal line stand on the previous series, then were able to put together a 97-yard drive that was capped by Jennings' reception. Jennings revealed to reporters after the game that he was the

The San Francisco 49ers started their 2021 season on Sunday with a win that was equal parts convincing and frightening, holding the Lions at Ford Field in Detroit by the score of 41-33. The 49ers built a 41-17 fourth quarter lead before the Lions added two late scores, due in part to them recovering an onsides kick with under two minutes to play. The Lions
