Silver: Some believe 49ers could draft Justin Fields, taking Shanahan’s offense to ‘another dimension’

As is the case with many analysts, NFL Network's Marc Ross sees Justin Fields of Ohio State as the better prospect when compared to Mac Jones of Alabama. The former Buckeye will hold a second pro day next week, but Ross feels the quarterback has already shown everything he needs to show to NFL teams.

"If teams, right now, are still trying to figure out if Justin Fields is the guy, then they've already missed the evaluation, or he's not their guy," Ross told Andrew Siciliano, Bucky Brooks, and Mike Silver on NFL Network.

Ross notes that with teams likely already having all of the information they need on the quarterback prospects, it is admirable that Fields is holding another pro day when he has little to gain.

"This is just him being a competitor and showing, 'Hey, I'm going to go and do everything possible, so there's no excuses," Ross added.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are expected to represent the 49ers at the upcoming workout. The two missed his first pro day as they attended Alabama's instead, fully knowing that Fields would hold another. Next week will be their first opportunity to watch Fields in person.

The national narrative is pointing to San Francisco selecting Mac Jones with the No. 3 overall pick. That speculation could change after Fields' second workout. Trey Lance of North Dakota State is another of the top quarterback prospects who plan to hold a second pro day, with that one coming on April 19.

While the Jones-to-49ers chatter is deafening, Silver says some don't 100 percent buy into that narrative.

"As people around the league who know Kyle Shanahan attempt to decipher what is going through his mind with that third overall pick now in his possession," Silver said, "there's definitely a faction that believes Justin Fields should be or will be his guy, that the athleticism and the playmaking on the big stage combined might allow Kyle to take his offense to another dimension.

"I agree with Marc and have been saying this: I think it's settled in Kyle's mind, but those who are attempting to read his mind, there are plenty of Justin Fields advocates out there."

By David Bonilla
Apr 23

When asked about the possibility of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk not being on the San Francisco 49ers roster on Friday morning, general manager John Lynch responded, "I wouldn't anticipate that." Lynch assured reporters that signing Aiyuk to a long-term extension is a priority, stating, "And our wish is that he's here and a part of the Niners for the rest of his career. We're working through that." While Lynch didn't elaborate on the conversations occurring behind closed doors, Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that a potential trade remains a

Mike Silver on how Deebo Samuel's contract might be the starting point for a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco
Apr 16

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. Rumor: Steelers believe they can acquire 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk at a bargain

By David Bonilla
Apr 17

According to Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein, who writes for "All Steelers" on the network, there's a level of confidence within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization that they can strike a deal for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk—and at a bargain rate. "According to a team source, the Steelers and 49ers trade talks are real," Strackbein wrote. "While nothing is imminent, they 'would be surprised if it didn't happen.' But it all comes down to compensation, and Pittsburgh isn't willing to budge much on price." While it seems unlikely that the 49ers would part ways with Aiyuk for anything less than a first-round draft
