Following an injury-plagued 2020 campaign, many fans are hopeful things are looking up for the San Francisco 49ers. After all, the team was in the Super Bowl just over a year ago. The Niners limped through 2020 without names like Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Bosa, George Kittle, and many others for much of the season. San Francisco suffered an absurd amount of injuries, which clearly contributed to its 6-10 record.

The 2021 season will be better, right?

Chris Roling of Bleacher Report and The Bengals Wire doesn't believe so. He lists the 49ers among his five NFL teams that are destined to disappoint during the upcoming season.

Why San Francisco? The team's salary-cap situation is a factor. OverTheCap.com estimates that the 49ers will have under $13 million available to spend and would like to keep players like Trent Williams and Kyle Juszczyk from departing. Then there's always the tough competition within the NFC West.

However, the first reason Roling points to is the quarterback situation, saying that San Francisco can't seem to "escape quarterback purgatory," referring to Garoppolo's status.

Garoppolo is set to earn $25 million this season. That's not an exorbitant amount for a starting NFL quarterback. However, when you consider that Garoppolo has appeared in just 25 regular-season games while missing 23 over the past three seasons, all while earning over $85 million during that time, that's where the value is seemingly lost.

"The 49ers aren't getting much from Jimmy Garoppolo, who, on the five-year, $137.5 million deal he signed before the 2018 season, has appeared in more than six games just once," wrote Roling. "San Francisco seemed like an obvious trade destination for Matthew Stafford because the front office can shed this contract with only $2.8 million in dead cap, but it will instead have to face him twice per year against the Los Angeles Rams."

Roling notes that the 49ers defense, which, despite injuries, ranked No. 5 in total yards allowed, No. 4 against the pass, and No. 7 against the run, should be "much improved" because it will be healthier. Although, not mentioned is the potential losses in the defensive backfield. Defensive backs Richard Sherman, Jason Verrett, K'Waun Williams, Jaquiski Tartt, and Ahkello Witherspoon are all scheduled to become unrestricted free agents.

The feeling seems to be that San Francisco's brain trust might have to hit several home runs this offseason via free agency and the draft to return to contention in 2021.

Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft. Things have yet to escalate that far with Aiyuk, but Rapoport sees his

Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I

Why ESPN analyst hopes 49ers address O-line in the draft

By David Bonilla

ESPN analyst Matt Miller watches the San Francisco 49ers differently than other teams. As a 49ers fan, he feels more invested in the team's successes and failures than most analysts. With the draft nearing, Miller made it clear which direction he believes head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch should take with their first pick. In his ESPN mock draft, a seven-round doozy, the analyst had the 49ers selecting former Arizona offensive lineman Jordan Morgan. Miller recently joined the 49ers Webzone "No Huddle" podcast, sharing why he adamantly hopes the team addresses the offensive line at the end of the month. "So I

Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy are why the 49ers can afford to pay Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

It's evident that the San Francisco 49ers engaged in long-term financial planning. Much discussion has centered around the feasibility of the team committing significant financial resources to two wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Some skeptics question the wisdom of such heavy investment in a single position, especially considering that the 49ers handed Samuel a substantial three-year extension merely two years ago. Adding complexity to this debate is the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy, positioning him to become the highest-paid player on the team. He will likely even become one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Where he ranks in average salary will depend upon whether he can replicate the stellar performance of his Pro Bowl 2023
