According to ESPN, the Philadelphia Eagles have traded quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-round pick that could become a first-rounder.

The San Francisco 49ers had reportedly inquired about Wentz early on. It is unknown how serious general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan were about the quarterback. The team may have simply been doing its due diligence to determine the market value for a player like Wentz. There is no indication that San Francisco looked into the opportunity any further.

The Eagles drafted Wentz out of North Dakota State with the No. 2 overall pick in 2016. He completed 251-of-437 attempts (57.4 percent) for 2,620 yards with 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions through 12 games last season. Philadelphia benched an ineffective Wentz for Week 14, starting rookie Jalen Hurts in his place.

The quarterback has passed for more than 3,000 yards in each of his four previous seasons and threw for a career-high 4,039 with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2019.

Wentz, 28, has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 16,811 yards with 113 touchdowns and 50 interceptions through his five NFL seasons. He was selected to his only Pro Bowl in 2017 but could not participate after suffering a torn ACL during Week 14. The Eagles went on to win Super Bowl LII without Wentz.

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than two weeks away, NFL Media draft analyst Chad Reuter recently identified the ideal top two draft picks for each team. The San Francisco 49ers have 10 selections in the upcoming draft, with their first two picks at No. 31 overall and No. 63. Reuter noted, "I kept some semblance of realism in this process, however, assigning each player only once and making reasonable projections of where prospects may be selected." Who are the standout picks for the 49ers? Reuter envisions the team addressing both offense and defense with their initial selections. It's widely anticipated that San Francisco will bolster its offensive line with

Six worst first-round draft picks in 49ers' history

By Marc Adams
Apr 13

It is less than two weeks away from the 2024 NFL Draft, and the San Francisco 49ers finally have a first-round draft pick, after not having one the last two years. Who will they select? Will it be a defensive player? An offensive player? They could use help on the offensive line and in the secondary and defensive line. And they may also have multiple holes to fill a year from now. Either way, the 49ers need to hit on these draft picks, especially in the early rounds, where they haven't always been at their best. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have some first-round misses, like DT Solomon Thomas and LB Rueben Foster. But are those the worst first-round picks in team history? Neither made this list, though some will argue that Thomas should be on it, mainly because he was taken
