Jerick McKinnon is one of nearly 40 San Francisco 49ers players scheduled to hit free agency this offseason. The running back reworked his contract last year to ensure his return for the 2020 season. Fans didn't expect him to be back in 2021, especially given the 49ers' limited salary-cap space. Now, McKinnon has made it clear that he doesn't expect to suit up in red and gold again either.
On Wednesday night, McKinnon spoke with teammate
Deebo Samuel on Instagram Live and was asked if he'd be back in 2021.
"Am I staying with the Niners? N----, f--k no," McKinnon responded. "What the hell you talking about? We gone! We gone!"
H/t to
KNBR for the find.
After missing two seasons due to an ACL injury, McKinnon was a pleasant surprise during training camp last year. However, that didn't translate to the regular season. McKinnon finished his 2020 campaign with 81 carries for 319 yards and five rushing touchdowns. He also had 33 receptions for 253 yards with a receiving score.
Re-signing McKinnon probably wasn't going to be a high priority for the 49ers, and it sounds like the running back is fine with that.
According to
Over The Cap and due to his restructured contract, the 49ers will pay McKinnon $2 million in 2021, whether he is on the roster or not.
