Cowherd explains why Deshaun Watson isn’t a good fit for the 49ers

Imagining Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson running head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense is enough to make fans giddy and willing to watch the team risk giving up years of top draft picks. How about the idea of seeing Watson hitting San Francisco 49ers receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk in stride or making things happen by improvising when a defense takes away his offensive weapons?

A Watson-49ers marriage may never come to fruition, but it is fun to talk about, and the media sure has enjoyed discussing the possibility. However, Colin Cowherd is not among those who feel the fit is as perfect as others assume.

Last week, the FS1 host of The Herd with Colin Cowherd went through the most talked about landing spots for Watson, including San Francisco, and shared his opinion on whether or not each was a good fit. He labeled each potential destination as either "Wats-On," indicating that it was a good fit, or "Wats-Off," indicating that it was not.

Cowherd wasn't high on a Watson-to-49ers trade scenario.

"I think people would be surprised -- he doesn't look right in that jersey," said Cowherd. "I'm going to say Wats-Off. First of all, he's got a history of injuries. So did Jimmy G. So, I think San Francisco would prefer to get a player without the big contract with little injury concern."

While Watson suffered ACL injuries during his freshman year at Clemson and his rookie season in the NFL, the quarterback has played in all but one game over the past three seasons. That one game was Watson sitting out the Week 17 finale in 2019.

"This feels like an offense that is so run-centric, that Shanahan has a ton of control and doesn't want his quarterback to do too much playmaking," continued Cowherd. "I think he likes quarterbacks that do what Shanahan wants, and sometimes Deshaun, you've got to let him be Deshaun. Wats-Off."

We may have seen Watson play his last snap as a Texan. The frustrated quarterback is unhappy with how he has been treated by the organization and how some of the decisions have been made there. Watson signed a four-year, $156 million extension before the 2020 season and has a no-trade clause in the deal. That gives him some leverage on where he lands, should he force a trade by the Texans.

Which teams did Cowherd feel were "Wats-On" in his little rundown? They were the Maimi Dolphins, New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cowherd: Paying Brock Purdy will transform the 49ers into the Cowboys

By David Bonilla

This week, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York remarked that the team is preparing to offer quarterback Brock Purdy a substantial deal next year. York views this as a "good problem" because it signifies that, after several setbacks, the 49ers have finally identified their franchise signal-caller. "I mean, it's what the market is," York said at the NFL owners meetings. "It's not like Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before. You have, I don't know how many players making over $40 million as a quarterback right now." York added, "And whether I like it or not, that's what the market is, and you have to accept the reality of the world. And to me, the

Jimmy Garoppolo explains why he signed with 49ers' division rival

By David Bonilla
Mar 20

Jimmy Garoppolo is back in the NFC West after signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback recently explained his decision to join the division rival after a one-season stint with the Las Vegas Raiders. "Obviously good players all around," Garoppolo said, per ESPN. "That's a big part of it. Talking to [head coach] Sean [McVay] on the phone, him just running me through offense and things that he had in mind, it really became appetizing. And I know a lot of the coaches here, so a lot of familiarity in that aspect. And then having played against the Rams a lot in my career, I've seen a lot of good things

Daniel Jeremiah explains why 49ers could still address pass rush in NFL Draft

By David Bonilla
Mar 21

Mock drafts will never please everyone, especially when they solely focus on the first 32 selections without offering perspective on what might come beyond the first round. Regarding the San Francisco 49ers, analyst Daniel Jeremiah's latest mock draft was no different. He projected former Penn State pass rusher Chop Robinson to join the Bay Area team. Why the skepticism from fans? The 49ers' free agency focus has been on revamping their defensive front. After allowing Arik Armstead, Chase Young, and others to depart for other organizations, the team addressed last season's inconsistent play by adding defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, trading for defensive tackle Maliek

Kyle Shanahan explains why 49ers promoted Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

After Steve Wilks's dismissal, the San Francisco 49ers had several options for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Although former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was considered for the role, he ultimately joined the coaching staff as the assistant head coach under head coach Kyle Shanahan. He will focus on game plan preparations while offering his experience to the team. Nick Sorensen, the team's defensive pass game specialist, was awarded the defensive coordinator position. Shanahan opted for an internal candidate, valuing Sorensen's familiarity with the staff and the defensive system. When asked what qualities Sorensen demonstrated to prove he's ready to call plays for the defense, Shanahan explained, "He's worked with a lot of people
