Steve Young feels a Deshaun Watson-to-49ers trade is worth giving up the draft picks

Jan 14, 2021 at 6:00 AM--

How much is Deshaun Watson worth? It wasn't long ago that the Houston Texans determined that he was worth $156 million to be the face of the franchise. If they don't rectify the situation with their young star quarterback soon, they may have to learn how much he is worth in draft compensation.

Watson may want out of Houston after expressing some frustration with how the organization handles itself. Could head coach Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers come calling? It would cost a lot, but it would also mean an opportunity to fix the mistake of choosing Solomon Thomas over one of the rookie quarterbacks available in the 2017 draft.

And no, I'm not counting C.J. Beathard.

The question becomes what the Texans might ask in return for Watson, should the team's relationship with its quarterback be beyond repair. Some have thrown out the possibility of three first-round picks being a starting point to open trade discussions.

Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young joined KNBR on Wednesday and shared his thoughts on the Watson situation.

"I would give two first-round picks for generational quarterbacks — these are potential Hall of Famers," Young said on the Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "Who are the generational quarterbacks playing right now? Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, probably Josh Allen. Like, young guys. Justin Herbert, very quickly. I would not trade Justin Herbert for less than that, even though he's won four games or something like that. But there's something about him that really gives me that sense."

Young adds that Watson is the type of player he would take a big risk on. We know he would be willing to part with two first-rounders. Would that risk include three first-round picks?

Responded Young: "Yeah, I would take a lot of risk for Deshaun Watson. I would."

Needless to say, Young is a big fan of what Watson is now and what he can be down the road. Young added that the Texans trading away the star player would be a terrible look for the franchise.

"He is, no joke, one of the best quarterbacks in the league," Young said. "... He is poised to be one of the generational greats, and he's already proven that he can handle it. ... To me, Deshaun Watson is like, 'Wow. I want that.'

"So, if the Texans lose Deshaun Watson, they should be sent to the Caracas league. They should be sent to some other league in some foreign country somewhere. They should not be part of the NFL. That's not possible. There's no way. You cannot lose a generational talent; I don't care who you get."

Monson explains why trading young 49ers stars for Deshaun Watson isn't unthinkable

By David Bonilla
Feb 24, 2021

Sam Monson, the lead analyst for Pro Football Focus, feels the trade partner that makes the most sense for Deshaun Watson is the Miami Dolphins. That is, assuming the quarterback can force the Houston Texans to trade him. The Dolphins have a lot of draft capital to surrender, including two first-rounders this year, and could be a quarterback away from contending. Another team that could be considered built to win now is the San Francisco 49ers. However, they do not have as appealing a portfolio of draft picks as Miami. That would mean that to compete in a bidding war for a player like Watson — and there is no evidence that they would consider it — San Francisco would need to throw in some young proven talent into an offer that would also include draft

Peter King weighs in on what it might cost for 49ers to trade for Deshaun Watson

By Kirk Larrabee

Would the 49ers be willing to trade one of their top two young defensive stars, a slew of draft picks, and more if it meant getting Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson in return? It's possible that's the type of package they might have to ship in Houston's direction if they ever have the chance. And it's one that NBC Sports NFL writer Peter King proposes in his latest Football Morning In America column, in which he comes up with his own deals for teams that could be interested in bringing the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback into the fold. King starts this discussion with an important disclaimer, which is the Texans have yet to give any sign whatsoever that they are actually interested in trading Watson, even though Watson (4,823 passing yards, 33

Report: 49ers among Deshaun Watson's list of teams he's 'intrigued by'

By David Bonilla
Feb 12, 2021

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers are among quarterback Deshaun Watson's list of teams that he is "intrigued by." "I checked in with a source that says Deshaun Watson has a list of teams that he's intrigued by," said Fowler on ESPN's Get Up. "He's not pigeonholing anything, but he's got a list. I didn't get all the teams, but I was told that the Denver Broncos, the San Francisco 49ers are two of them. "I also asked the source about the Jets and the Dolphins because they have the most draft capital this year and the next few years. I was told the Jets, 'Eh, probably not.' Maybe more so the Dolphins as far as viability." Watson has expressed frustration with the Texans organization and has requested a trade. The

One sportsbook gives 49ers 2nd-best odds to land Deshaun Watson

On Thursday, Bovada had the San Francisco 49ers with the fifth-best odds to land quarterback Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans. Those odds haven't budged. One sportsbook, however, has San Francisco with much better odds. That would be DraftKings, who have the 49ers with the second-best odds to have Watson on the roster for Week 1 of the 2021 season (h/t to Patrick Tulini). Below are the teams with the five best odds to acquire Watson, per DraftKings. It's a significant jump from the +1100 odds San Francisco held with the sportsbook just days ago. Texans +200 49ers
