Jan 12, 2021 at 3:00 PM--

What we're looking at with Fields, from the 49ers perspective, is a question of whether Kyle Shanahan would assess him and conclude that he is a polished enough prospect to start instead of Jimmy Garoppolo from Day 1.

Week 2 of the 2020 season was devastating for the San Francisco 49ers. The team lost several players to injuries on that MetLife Stadium field, and the depth chart never looked the same after that. Among the lost players was defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, who suffered tears to his ACL, lateral meniscus, and medial patellofemoral ligament just two plays after watching his teammate, Nick Bosa, also suffer a torn ACL. While the damage was more significant than just a torn ACL, the surgeon who repaired the damage — Dr. Neal ElAttrache — in both players' knees recently spoke with The Athletic and sounded optimistic about their

ESPN's Smith and Kellerman have different QB predictions for the 49ers

Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman of ESPN's First Take have different predictions on who will start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers during the upcoming season. Kellerman often defends Jimmy Garoppolo against Smith's criticisms, so you might naturally assume that Kellerman would predict that San Francisco would avoid shaking things up. You might also assume that the critical Smith predicts that the 49ers move on from Garoppolo. The opposite is true. You might remember the analytics site predicting in January that offensive tackle Trent Williams would return to the San Francisco 49ers on a four-year, $80 million deal with $62.5 million in guarantees. Nothing has changed since then. That remains exactly what Treash predicts for Williams, who is listed as Pro Football Focus' fifth-highest ranked impending free agent. "San Francisco is going to have to work some magic this offseason," explains Treash. "They are projected to have just around $13.5 million in cap space available, but star tackle Trent Williams

What might things look like for the San Francisco 49ers after the first wave of free agency? Time will tell, but one possible scenario was laid forth by sports financial analysis website Spotrac earlier this week. Spotrac operator Michael Ginnitti posted a long list of free agency projections on February 17, which included guesses for salaries and destinations of the top impending free agents across the NFL. Ginnitti included two 49ers among his guesses -- offensive tackle Trent Williams and cornerback Richard Sherman -- while also projecting three other free agents to wind up in San Francisco. Ginnitti's projections on Williams and Sherman aren't
