The 2020 NFL season is in the books for the San Francisco 49ers, and members of The Faithful can now turn their attention toward the NFL Draft. One position that will have no shortage of news coverage this offseason is quarterback, as was the case last offseason. Will Jimmy Garoppolo return to the team in 2021, or will Kyle Shanahan and company find a better option?

Two mock drafts from Monday morning have the 49ers adding a rookie quarterback to the roster. The first is from Pro Football Focus, which has San Francisco moving up to the No. 4 overall pick to select Justin Fields of Ohio State.

"There are a few reasons why I strongly believe the 49ers will be the team most likely to sell the farm for one of these quarterbacks," wrote Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus. "The first is that quarterback classes like this don't come around every year. The 49ers are too good to truly bottom-out, and they end up in a position to take one here."

Fields finished his collegiate career with a 69.4 completion percentage for 5,507 yards with 66 touchdowns and just nine interceptions in three seasons between Georgia and Ohio State. In 2020, he completed 73.4 percent of his passes for 1,906 yards with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions through seven games with the Buckeyes. That includes his six-touchdown performance on New Year's Day against Clemson.

"Also, head coach Kyle Shanahan has never had himself a true franchise guy since taking over for the 49ers, and we saw what he did with one in Atlanta," adds Renner. "The final reason is that all of the top guys are mobile — an element we've seen take run games around the league to the next level. Shanahan created magic with RG3 as a rookie, and I believe he could do something similar with Fields."

Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News's latest mock draft has the 49ers staying put at No. 12 overall but still selecting a quarterback — Trey Lance of North Dakota State.

"Lance is slowly climbing back up boards with his massive upside," explains Iyer. "As more teams see tapes of his one statistically brilliant lone season as a starter (2,786 yards passing, 28 TDs, no INTs, 1,100 yards rushing, 14 TDs) it's harder to ignore the impressive physical and athletic skills he displayed in his first full season of action.

"The 49ers can get out of Jimmy Garoppolo's contract and needs to shoot for the QB ceiling to better dominate with their array of offensive skill talent, including George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Lance's running would add a new dangerous element to Kyle Shanahan's scheme and he has the head, quick release and accuracy to handle the passing precision of it all."

7-round mock draft: 49ers trade up to fortify secondary

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers first selection in next week's draft comes at No. 31 overall. However, NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter doesn't have the Bay Area team remaining at that spot in the first round. In his seven-round mock draft, he envisions the 49ers striking a deal with the Green Bay Packers to move up six spots to No. 25 overall, where they select former Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. Reuter notes, "Whether it's for a cornerback like McKinstry, an offensive lineman or a receiver, the 49ers could very well give up a mid-round pick to acquire one of the few missing pieces on an otherwise potent roster." The rest of the mock draft reveals at least part of the

49ers trade up for offensive lineman in mock draft

The San Francisco 49ers hold the No. 31 overall pick, but speculation abounds that they may seek to move before or during the first round of next week's NFL Draft. With the offensive line as a prime target for improvement and the position going mostly ignored in free agency, a strategic trade-up to acquire an impact player could be in the cards. Alyssa Barbieri proposes such a scenario in her latest mock draft for USA Today's Touchdown Wire. Barbieri envisions the 49ers trading with the Miami Dolphins to move up 10 spots, selecting former Alabama offensive lineman JC Latham. Latham started 27 games

Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I

7-round mock draft from The Athletic sees 49ers fortifying defense early

By David Bonilla
Apr 17

Analyst Dane Brugler recently revealed his seven-round mock draft for The Athletic, forecasting all 257 selections in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, set to kick off next week. "Piecing together a mock like this is time consuming, but I enjoy the exercise, because it allows me to focus on each team's needs, organizational trends and prospect-team pairings that make sense based on '30' visits, league buzz and overall interest," Brugler wrote. Most expect the 49ers to address the trenches early in the draft, and Brugler has the team doing that. It's just not on the offensive side of the football. In fact, Brugler doesn't have San Francisco
