Tyler Gaffney is an elite athlete with awful luck. The former two-sport Stanford star was signed to the 49ers' practice squad last week, which was the latest step in one-of-a-kind athletic journey. It's included zero regular-season NFL snaps, one season of minor league baseball, two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots and three knee surgeries.

Armstead, a former first-round pick, was an impactful force on the football field. However, his availability over the last two seasons forced the 49ers to reevaluate his contract, and when his salary could not be significantly reduced, the two sides parted ways.
