49ers Inactives: Surprise absence in the secondary, Cowboys without their star

He was asked about the team's presence in South Carolina to watch Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The Niners own the No. 12 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and Lawrence is expected to be the top selection, going to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yet, San Francisco was among 17 teams in attendance to watch Lawrence. Peters reminds everyone that there were other players there. In his latest mock draft for NFL.com, the draft analyst has John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan bolstering their offensive line, adding former Northwestern offensive tackle Rashawn Slater. Offensive tackle Trent Williams is scheduled to become a free agent next month and will require a hefty annual salary to stay with San Francisco. He's worth it, though.

What will the San Francisco 49ers do with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo? The simple answer is that the team will retain his services, should a perceived upgrade not present itself. If a perceived upgrade is acquired, then the team will likely try to shop the quarterback. "Most presume he'll be traded," wrote Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk on Tuesday. "But here's the question: If the 49ers don't want to keep Garoppolo at the balance of his current contract, who would trade for the thing?" The New England Patriots would likely welcome back Garoppolo with open arms — for the right price. They have the cap space to absorb his salary.
