Report: 49ers ‘most likely option’ is to play home games in Arizona

Nov 29, 2020 at 7:10 AM--

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Arizona Cardinals have offered their home field, State Farm Stadium, to the San Francisco 49ers for the at least two home games they will be unable to play at Levi's Stadium. New COVID-19-related restrictions in Santa Clara County will go into effect on Monday. They will prevent the 49ers from playing their next two home games — a December 7 matchup against the Buffalo Bills and a December 13 game against the Washington Football Team — in the area.

There is no conflict when it comes to the 49ers' and Cardinals' schedules. Arizona hosts the Los Angeles Rams on December 6 and is out of town the next week.

If necessary, the 49ers could play their last home game of the season — against the Seattle Seahawks — in Arizona. The Cardinals are out of town that weekend too.

Santa Clara County is banning all collegiate and professional contact sports and requiring a 14-day quarantine for anyone traveling into the area from over 150 miles away. It also means that the 49ers will be unable to practice at their facility, which neighbors Levi's Stadium. The restrictions are expected to be in effect for three weeks.

Rapoport calls the use of State Farm Stadium the "most likely option" for the 49ers to play their next two home games. He also notes that there are options in the area for the Niners to set up a temporary practice facility.

"Their NFC West rivals -- who actually host the Niners in Week 16 -- are said to be willing to accommodate them," wrote Rapoport. "The league would like the 49ers to play in an NFL stadium if possible. Another option is for the 49ers to play at a stadium in Texas."

The 49ers are in Los Angeles today to play the Rams and return home tonight before the restrictions go into effect. A decision will need to be made before mid-week when the team is scheduled to begin practicing for its home game against the Bills.

By David Bonilla

This probably won't come as a surprise to anyone. If the 49ers have an opportunity to upgrade at a position, they will try to do so — salary cap permitting. That's pretty much a given, and head coach Kyle Shanahan has said that the team will always look to improve, no matter the position. That includes quarterback. "You can't say anything with certainty," Shanahan said last week. "I mean, you don't sit here and make promises on anything. When we build a football team, it's your job to put the best team together year in and year out." While Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have expressed confidence that Jimmy Garoppolo will be

Transcript provided by the San Francisco 49ers Communications staff. Through all the adversity you faced this season, what did you learn about yourself? And then, what did you learn about your teammates? "I mean, I would just say first off, you know, you can battle through anything that's thrown at you in life. Whenever there are certain things that hit you, that you feel like you can't recover from or you feel like you'll never recover from, yeah you can. And I would just tell that to anybody out there who feels down in the dumps or something, if something happened in

Why are the 49ers wearing their road jerseys during Week 17 'home' game vs. Seahawks?

By David Bonilla
Jan 3, 2021

It's been a strange 2020 season, so why not end it on another strange note? The San Francisco 49ers are hosting a "home" game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, against the Seattle Seahawks. In addition to having "OREGON" and "IOWA STATE" paint visible in the end zones following the Fiesta Bowl, which was played at the venue, San Francisco is wearing its road jerseys. While Arizona may not be the 49ers' home, they are the "home team" after the team moved to the state due to Santa Clara County restrictions banning contact sports. San Francisco has been displaced for over a month. Why are the 49ers wearing their typical white road uniforms? Matt Maiocco of NBC
