San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York recently spoke with NBC Sports Bay Area and called the team's decision to hold onto Jimmy Garoppolo while drafting his replacement an investment in Trey Lance's future. Basically, that means York had no problem holding onto the veteran quarterback and his hefty salary if it means affording Lance the luxury of sitting, learning, and eventually being better for it. "So, for us, if you invest $25 (million) or $50 million into your rookie to get them ready, then to me, we're investing in the long-term future of our team," York told Matt Maiocco. That was too pricey for the 49ers, apparently, According to analyst Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, head coach Kyle Shanahan really wanted to add Dalton and wasn't happy when the veteran quarterback slipped through the 49ers' fingertips. "They wanted to sign Andy Dalton in free agency as their veteran quarterback and then trade (Jimmy) Garoppolo and draft Lance,"

The San Francisco 49ers sat at No. 13 on Sports Illustrated's post-Super Bowl power rankings. That's not bad for a team that finished the 2020 season last in its division and earned just six wins. However, the Niners endured an injury-plagued campaign, losing many of their stars as they limped through the season. It wasn't how the team envisioned their Super Bowl revenge tour going. Many felt that a 6-10 record wasn't indicative of the team's overall talent. Much of that talent, though, had been sidelined. That's why they ranked in the top half of that February power ranking despite finishing with a losing record. Sports Illustrated published its first
