49ers Inactives: Ahkello Witherspoon on the bench again

This season seems to represent a reckoning for the 49ers. The obvious part of that equation is the relentless nature of the injury pileup the team has dealt with, but the other aspect is most of the 2017 and 2018 draft class entering the final or second-to-last year of their deals.

Justin Fields to throw again for NFL teams on April 14; 49ers expected to attend

Much was said of San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's absences from Ohio State's pro day last week. Instead of traveling to Columbus to watch quarterback Justin Fields, a candidate to be drafted with the team's No. 3 overall pick, the duo was in Tuscaloosa for Alabama's pro day, watching Mac Jones. Why Jones over Fields? "[Just] talking with Fields' agent [David Mulugheta] and everything, we'll get another one from him too," Shanahan explained last week, per Kirk Larrabee. "So we'll be able to see him. That kind of made it an easy decision." According to Fields' agent, that next opportunity will come on

Mac Jones once again has the best odds to be drafted by the 49ers

For nearly a week, oddsmakers gave Justin Fields of Ohio State the best odds to be selected No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers. That followed weeks of Mac Jones of Alabama being in the top spot. On March 26, the Niners traded up nine spots for a quarterback by surrendering four draft picks, including three first-rounders, to the Miami Dolphins. The speculation on who the team might be targeting started immediately, with most "experts" feeling that Jones fit the profile of someone who head coach Kyle Shanahan would covet. On Monday, Shanahan and general manager John Lynch watched Trey Lance of North Dakota State at his second pro day. While that increased Lance's odds, it wasn't enough to overtake Jones or Fields. On Wednesday morning, Jones has

Much has been made of Mac Jones' DUI in 2017. Some would say that not enough has been made of it while evaluating the former Alabama quarterback's character. However, a recent feature from NFL.com sheds some light on the incident and how it altered Jones' path. At the time, Jones was a redshirt freshman and the third quarterback on the depth chart. In the very early hours of November 3, 2017, Jones was involved in a car accident, underwent a sobriety test, and was then arrested for driving under the influence. He was also charged with improper ID by a minor. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. "We are disappointed in

Former NFL QB explains why criticisms of Justin Fields, potential 49ers draft pick, are 'bogus'

No one is questioning Justin Fields' athleticism. Some question the former Ohio State quarterback's ability to transition from the college game to the pros quickly. Mark Sanchez recently joined The Pat McAfee Show and explained why Fields' ability to learn an NFL playbook might not take as long as some might be anticipating. Maybe all of his skeptics, who want to find ways to bring the quarterback down, are wrong. "For Justin, this guy, Dr. Goldman, he's a sports psychologist; I talked to him yesterday," Sanchez said (h/t to Jordan Cohn of 95.7 The Game). "He has some interesting
