Mike McGlinchey believes 49ers can still ‘make a run’ at playoffs

Mike McGlinchey's right. The San Francisco 49ers haven't been eliminated from playoff contention yet. At 4-5, anything is possible. However, given how injuries have ravaged the roster, it will be challenging to reach postseason play.

The 49ers' third-year offensive tackle hasn't given up on his team's chances, though.

"November and December make and break NFL seasons," McGlinchey told reporters on Wednesday. "Everybody can do whatever they want for the first eight, nine weeks of the season. But when it comes down to it, it's the teams that are getting better each and every week, trying to stack days, trying to stack games, and experience ... that really make the run."

San Francisco has $80.8 million worth of salary-cap space on injured reserve, according to ESPN Stats & Information. A week go, the Green Bay Packers ran onto the Levi's Stadium field to battle what has been dubbed as the 49ers' JV team and walked away with a 34-17 win.

"Everybody wants to say that the Niners, we've dealt with all this kind of crap that we've had to deal with all year," McGlinchey continued, "but we still are in position to make a run here. And we've got the right people in this building to build on that every single week, work on the cohesion, work on the communication, work on your techniques, and just play better football, whether it's offense or defense or special teams."

McGlinchey isn't the only one who refuses to believe the 49ers' playoff hopes are over. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is still working toward that goal. He wants to see his squad upset the favored New Orleans Saints this weekend, head into their bye week, and then take care of business in the remaining games.

"I still know we've got a chance to at least get in that tournament at the end of the year," Shanahan said after last week's loss to the Packers, "but we've got to recover a little bit here with these three days and make sure when we come back, we start playing some better football."

Mike Silver on how Deebo Samuel's contract might be the starting point for a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco
Apr 16

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. Steelers are reportedly still pursuing 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk

By Marc Adams

According to NFL Insider, Benjamin Allbright, the Pittsburgh Steelers are trying to trade for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, to add him as a weapon for QB Russell Wilson. The Steelers added Wilson earlier this offseason after the Denver Broncos decided to move on from him. Aiyuk, if paired with Steelers WR George Pickens, would give Wilson two dangerous threats in the passing game. 👀 pic.twitter.com/261FS6DjhL— Benjamin Allbright (@AllbrightNFL)

Rumor: Steelers believe they can acquire 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk at a bargain

By David Bonilla
Apr 17

According to Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein, who writes for "All Steelers" on the network, there's a level of confidence within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization that they can strike a deal for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk—and at a bargain rate. "According to a team source, the Steelers and 49ers trade talks are real," Strackbein wrote. "While nothing is imminent, they 'would be surprised if it didn't happen.' But it all comes down to compensation, and Pittsburgh isn't willing to budge much on price." While it seems unlikely that the 49ers would part ways with Aiyuk for anything less than a first-round draft
