Fowler: 49ers' draft moves could change plans for Jimmy Garoppolo

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is set to earn about $25 million this year. Whomever they pick at No. 3 overall will have a cap hit of about $6.2 million in 2021, per OverTheCap.com. If the gap between the two players isn't seen as great—and a lot of that may depend on actually getting the rookie into the building and seeing how fast he can progress—that could accelerate the plan to part ways with Garoppolo. Maybe something happens before the draft. Maybe it happens during, after, or even next year. For now, the 49ers sound comfortable keeping Garoppolo around for another season while their rookie quarterback sits and learns. It's a prudent plan considering the roster is built to compete for a championship right now. On Sunday, ESPN's

Silver: Some believe 49ers could draft Justin Fields, taking Shanahan's offense to 'another dimension'

As is the case with many analysts, NFL Network's Marc Ross sees Justin Fields of Ohio State as the better prospect when compared to Mac Jones of Alabama. The former Buckeye will hold a second pro day next week, but Ross feels the quarterback has already shown everything he needs to show to NFL teams. "If teams, right now, are still trying to figure out if Justin Fields is the guy, then they've already missed the evaluation, or he's not their guy," Ross told Andrew Siciliano, Bucky Brooks, and Mike Silver on NFL Network. Ross notes that with teams likely already having all of the information they need on the quarterback prospects, it is admirable that Fields is holding another pro day when he has little to gain. "This is just him being a competitor

A second report stating that the San Francisco 49ers seek a first-round pick to consider trading Jimmy Garoppolo has surfaced. That means the team has no real desire to part ways with the quarterback despite making a move last week to draft his successor. San Francisco seeks to keep Garoppolo around for this season, allowing the team to ease a rookie into the playbook and offense. On Wednesday, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that it would take a first-round pick for the 49ers to consider altering their plan for the upcoming season. "I was told that, yes, it'd take a first-round pick for the Niners to listen at this point," Breer wrote, "which

PFF identifies Clemson RB Travis Etienne as a forward-thinking draft fit for 49ers

Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus went through all 32 NFL teams and tried to look one or two years in the future to project areas of need for each. Maybe a certain position group is considered among the team's strengths now, but will that be the case down the road? He then tried to find a good draft prospect—at a good value—to fill that potential need. "The respective prospect pairings for those teams all stand out as good value for where they would be selected," wrote Linsey, "and their selection would serve as a preventative measure to maintain strength at that position for years to come." For the San Francisco 49ers, it was the running
