The San Francisco 49ers have placed Jalen Hurd on injured reserve. The third-year wide receiver is attempting to return from the ACL injury he suffered before the start of last season. While he appeared in one preseason game this year—an August 29 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders—he has yet to appear in a regular-season matchup. Being on injured reserve means Hurd will have to miss at least three games. That will make him eligible to return for Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers also activated cornerback Dontae Johnson from the practice squad to make him available for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. That could mean that starting cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (knee) is unlikely to be available. He was listed as "doubtful" on the

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have insisted that the San Francisco 49ers were interested in Trey Lance since they started scouting this year's rookie quarterback class. For Shanahan, that process started in January after last season ended. The 49ers traded up to the No. 3 overall pick and eventually selected Lance despite most in the media and around the league believing that the target was Mac Jones of Alabama. The 49ers insist that Lance was always the player to beat in their minds. He was the one for whom they made the trade. ESPN's Adam Schefter disputed that

It remains to be seen what the 49ers will do at cornerback against the Detroit Lions on Sunday if starter Emmanuel Moseley is unable to play, but it's possible that recently-signed veteran Josh Norman may be able to contribute if called upon. Moseley remained sidelined at practice on Thursday while dealing with a knee injury. Norman has less than a week of practice with the 49ers under his belt after being signed on September 6, which creates a question of whether or not he'd be in shape to play in Sunday's season opener. But defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans told reporters after practice on Thursday that Norman is trending in a positive direction despite his limited practice time. "One thing about Josh is he's a veteran who has done it for a while," Ryans said.

The San Francisco 49ers have announced that running back Raheem Mostert and cornerback Jason Verrett have been placed on injured reserve. Both will miss the remainder of the 2021 season. Mostert and Verrett were injured during Sunday's win against the Detroit Lions. Mostert suffered a knee injury. While he was initially expected to miss about eight weeks, the running back announced today that he would undergo season-ending surgery on what is reported to be a torn meniscus. Verrett suffered a torn ACL and lands on injured reserve for the sixth time in eight seasons. These are devastating injuries to two players who were expected to be significant contributors this season. Mostert and Verrett are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents after the
