Why did the 49ers release Mohamed Sanu and not ... someone else?

The San Francisco 49ers surprisingly parted ways with Mohamed Sanu today. It was surprising because the veteran wide receiver spent just 18 days with the team before being told his services were no longer necessary.
One person who was shocked and seemingly unhappy about the move was Sanu's now-former teammate, rookie
Brandon Aiyuk. The first-year receiver shared his disappointment via Twitter but later deleted the post.
Here is it from our friends over at @TheSFNiners.
The 49ers have Richie James Jr. slated to return from injured reserve after he missed three games due to a hamstring injury. The team has an excess of receivers. So why choose to release Sanu, who was the team's most experienced NFL receiver, over some other names?
Matt Barrows tackled that question in his
most recent mailbag for The Athletic while noting that neither James nor Dante Pettis has caught a pass this season. Sanu, at least, had one reception in his three game appearances and has served as a mentor for younger players like Aiyuk (thus the disappointment) during his short time with the team.
"For one, Sanu didn't play any special teams, a significant factor when determining which non-starting receiver is active on game days," explained Barrows. "James and Pettis both can return punts. Secondly, James and Pettis are former draft picks and the 49ers aren't going to merely give away a former draft pick."
Sanu seemed content with doing whatever the 49ers asked of him.
"I just want to help out any way I can, for real," Sanu said two weeks ago. "We have a lot of talented young guys that just need some leadership. I feel like I can help in any way possible, whether it's making plays or showing them how to make plays in critical situations because a lot of those guys are going to play and make key plays for our team."
San Francisco still has a surplus of receivers on the roster. 49ers wide receivers hauled in eight total passes for 86 yards on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. By comparison — and maybe not a fair comparison —
George Kittle caught 15 passes for 183 yards. Although, that was a
historically great performance from the All-Pro tight end.
Kendrick Bourne leads the 49ers wide receivers this season with 13 catches for 197 yards.
There is also the possibility that we haven't seen the last of Sanu in red and gold, given how injuries have plagued the team this season.

Did the 49ers get better in the first week of free agency?
It's been less than one week since the free agency rumors started swirling. The San Francisco 49ers have been busy, from restructuring contracts to seeing some of their own sign elsewhere to bringing aboard new players. They even pulled off a trade. But have they improved their roster this first week of NFL free agency?
Let's take a look at which additions and returning players help, and which losses hurt.
Additions that help
The addition that helped the most is likely edge rusher Leonard Floyd. The veteran pass rusher played in all 17 games last season and hasn't missed a game since 2017. The 49ers have been searching for that edge rusher opposite of Nick Bosa since Dee Ford. Floyd very well could be that guy, finishing with at least nine sacks
49ers officially release DT Arik Armstead
The San Francisco 49ers have made it official: the team announced the release of defensive tackle Arik Armstead with a June 1 designation. This means the $18 million salary-cap savings will hit the 49ers' books later. However, Armstead is free to sign with any team immediately.
While San Francisco approached Armstead about taking a pay cut from his scheduled $17.41 million base salary, a deal could not be reached, leading to the release of the team's longest-tenured current player.
The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that Armstead is drawing interest from multiple teams, including the Tennessee Titans, so the defensive tackle might find a new home
Report: 49ers to release DT Arik Armstead
The Arik Armstead era in Santa Clara is coming to an end. According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the San Francisco 49ers are set to release the veteran defensive tackle, allowing him to become a free agent.
Sources to @BleacherReport: #49ers star DL Arik Armstead has decided to become a free agent and will be released. Armstead comes off a 6 tackle, 1-sack performance in the Super Bowl, and ranks 4th in playoff sacks among all active
Leonard Floyd reveals why he signed with the 49ers
Former Buffalo Bills defensive end Leonard Floyd has become the San Francisco 49ers' most significant free-agent acquisition thus far this offseason. While the 31-year-old pass rusher had multiple suitors, the Bay Area team emerged as the most aggressive in its pursuit.
On Monday, Floyd spoke to reporters for the first time since the agreement with the 49ers was revealed. During the conversation, he elaborated on why the decision to head to Santa Clara was easy.
"Yeah, I got a call from my agent—I had quite a few offers," Floyd said. "But what it was, the 49ers didn't bullsh--t around. They was out the gate, came in with a great deal. It was a solid, solid deal for me. And there really wasn't no second-guessing it. They showed that they wanted me from the
