The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 3 contest against the New York Giants on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a high-ankle sprain during this past weekend's matchup against the New York Jets. He didn't practice this week and has been ruled out for Sunday. Nick Mullens will
start in his place.
Tight end
George Kittle had been ramping up his practice time this week after sustaining an MCL sprain and bone bruise during Week 1. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced on Friday, however, that he has been ruled out for Sunday.
Shanahan spoke with Kittle before Friday's practice to determine where he is in his recovery.
"I thought it was a lot safer to leave him out," Shanahan explained to reporters. "That didn't need to wait another day because of how he sounds today."
The 49ers will be without their top two running backs in Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman. Both have been ruled out, which means increased roles for Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson, Jr. JaMycal Hasty will be promoted from the practice squad to help the group, Shanahan said on Friday morning.
Also ruled out are linebacker
Dre Greenlaw (quadriceps) and defensive end Dee Ford, who is dealing with a back injury.
"That thing has to quiet down, and when it does, we can build [Ford] back up and get him ready to play," general manager
John Lynch said on Thursday. "I've talked to Dee. Dee's eager to do that. We've just got to kind of get through this. It's a little flared up right now, and it's got to quiet down before we start getting him ready to come back to play."
Shanahan on Greenlaw: "We were hoping he could get up this week. He ended up being hurt a little bit worse than we expected."
Below are the official injury reports for the 49ers and Giants, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff. Also included are Friday's practice participation reports.

According to general manager John Lynch, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward wasn't the sole player to undergo core muscle surgery this offseason. Lynch disclosed to reporters at the NFL owners meetings on Monday that All-Pro tight end George Kittle also had the procedure.
However, the silver lining is that both players are expected to be fully cleared for training camp, set to commence at the end of July.
George Kittle and Charvarius Ward both had core muscle surgery this offseason and will be back, fully cleared, for
Dre Greenlaw has his sights set on returning to the football field in Week 1 of the 2024 season. The San Francisco 49ers linebacker sustained a non-contact torn Achilles last month during the team's Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, dealing a significant blow to a team that fought into overtime in the NFL championship game.
Greenlaw underwent surgery on February 15 and recently shared a photo on Instagram of his rehabilitation from the Achilles injury.

After the success of "Quarterback," the NFL has announced a new series on Netflix called "Receiver." This series will follow a similar format but focus on those who haul in passes. San Francisco 49ers fans will be delighted to learn that two popular team players, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle, will be among those featured in the upcoming show.
The two 49ers stars are among the most charismatic individuals on the roster, so it's easy to see why they were chosen for the series. The other stars of the show will be Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders, Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings, and Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit
Jimmy Garoppolo is back in the NFC West after signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback recently explained his decision to join the division rival after a one-season stint with the Las Vegas Raiders.
"Obviously good players all around," Garoppolo said, per ESPN. "That's a big part of it. Talking to [head coach] Sean [McVay] on the phone, him just running me through offense and things that he had in mind, it really became appetizing. And I know a lot of the coaches here, so a lot of familiarity in that aspect. And then having played against the Rams a lot in my career, I've seen a lot of good things
