The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 3 contest against the New York Giants on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

George Kittle practiced for the second consecutive day after returning on Wednesday while recovering from a sprained MCL and bone bruise. That's good news for the 49ers, who hope to get their All-Pro tight end back soon.

Should Kittle play on Sunday, Nick Mullens may be the quarterback throwing footballs to him. Jimmy Garoppolo missed his second consecutive practice after suffering a high-ankle sprain against the New York Jets.

Running backs Raheem Mostert (knee) and Tevin Coleman (knee) didn't practice, and neither is expected to play against the Giants. The same is likely for defensive end Dee Ford (back).

"When you're dealing with a back injury, you really don't know the timetable," Shanahan said on Wednesday. "I know he's gotten some medicine this week that we're hoping helps, but that's a wait-and-see approach. So each day, you're looking at him to see how it goes."

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw (quadricep), who was limited on Wednesday, did not practice on Thursday.

Below are Thursday's practice participation reports for both the 49ers and Giants, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff.
