Pro Football Focus released its first
Team of the Week for the 2020 season, and, despite starting 0-1, two San Francisco 49ers players earned spots on the roster.
Tackle
Trent Williams and linebacker
Dre Greenlaw were each considered among the best at their positions during Week 1 and were named to this week's squad.
Williams even captured the Play of the Week honors after
obliterating Cardinals linebacker Jordan Hicks on Sunday.
"After not playing a down of football since 2018, Trent Williams came back in 2020 with a bang — literally," wrote Anthony Treash. "The clip above shows Williams climbing up to the second level and laying out Arizona linebacker Jordan Hicks. That's our play of the week, and it was instrumental in him landing a spot on the PFF Team of the Week mentioned earlier. His 89.7 run-block grade was the third-best of the week, and he allowed only a single hurry in pass-protection."
Williams is in his 10th NFL season and first with San Francisco after a trade from Washington in April. He earned Pro Football Focus' highest-overall grade (88.6) from Sunday's game between the 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, and was the second-highest graded NFL tackle during Week 2. Only
Andrew Whitworth of the
Los Angeles Rams graded higher, and he earned the other tackle spot on PFF's Team of the Week.
Greenlaw is in his second NFL season. His 84.2 overall grade from Week 1 ranked third on the team and second only to defensive end
Nick Bosa (84.7) on defense. It was the second-highest linebacker grade during Week 1 among players with 30-or-more snaps.
Greenlaw finished the game with five tackles, including one for a loss, and a pass defensed in 35 snaps.

49ers achieve "dream scenario" in latest PFF mock draft
While news of Arik Armstead's impending release could potentially alter the San Francisco 49ers' draft strategy, we'll first have to wait to see how the team addresses its defensive front in free agency. Assuming the 49ers brain trust has a plan in place and can execute it properly, that would leave them free to address the offensive line next month.
In the latest mock draft by analytics site Pro Football Focus, the 49ers are projected to do just that, with former Alabama tackle JC Latham falling to them at No. 31 overall.
"Admittedly, this is a dream scenario for the 49ers," analyst Dalton Wasserman wrote in the pre-free agency
49ers announce team has re-signed Chris Conley
The San Francisco 49ers announced today that the team has re-signed WR Chris Conley to a one-year deal. Conley spent 2023 with the 49ers but only appeared in eight games. He finished the regular season with three receptions for 69 yards.
But Conley saved his best for the postseason. Although he only had two receptions for 35 yards, his catches came in big moments. In the Divisional Playoff Game against the Green Bay Packers, with the 49ers trailing 21-17, Conley brought in a 17-yard catch that moved the ball to Green Bay's 26-yard line. The 49ers scored the winning touchdown on the drive.
Then in Super Bowl LVIII, Conley hauled in an 18-yard reception in the first quarter to help set up a Jake Moody field goal. But perhaps Conely's biggest plays in the Super Bowl
Did the 49ers get better in the first week of free agency?
It's been less than one week since the free agency rumors started swirling. The San Francisco 49ers have been busy, from restructuring contracts to seeing some of their own sign elsewhere to bringing aboard new players. They even pulled off a trade. But have they improved their roster this first week of NFL free agency?
Let's take a look at which additions and returning players help, and which losses hurt.
Additions that help
The addition that helped the most is likely edge rusher Leonard Floyd. The veteran pass rusher played in all 17 games last season and hasn't missed a game since 2017. The 49ers have been searching for that edge rusher opposite of Nick Bosa since Dee Ford. Floyd very well could be that guy, finishing with at least nine sacks
Charvarius Ward willing to help 49ers land Tre'Davious White
The San Francisco 49ers likely aren't finished fortifying their defense and have reportedly expressed interest in bolstering their defensive backfield. If they require assistance making a significant move, one 49ers player is prepared to lend a helping hand.
Last week, the Buffalo Bills released All-Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White, who appears to be an ideal fit for San Francisco's needs opposite Charvarius Ward. Over the weekend, Ward took to social media to reveal that he and White share the same agent and that he is willing to nudge the free-agent defensive back in the right direction.
Ward described White as a "hand in glove
