Despite injuries, Rams coach Sean McVay expects 49ers defense to be a 'phenomenal challenge'

By David Bonilla

It seems like injuries have impacted the San Francisco 49ers no matter where you look on the team's roster. On Sunday, fans saw what Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was able to do against an injury-depleted group of 49ers cornerbacks. Injuries have decimated the pass rush. Now, linebacker Kwon Alexander is expected to be out indefinitely with a high-ankle sprain. You would think Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay would be salivating at the opportunity to attack the injury-plagued 49ers defense. That isn't the case, though. To say that Jimmy Garoppolo struggled during his half of play against the Miami Dolphins would be an understatement. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback recorded the lowest single-game pass rating (15.7) of his career while going 7-of-17 for 77 yards and two interceptions. In Garoppolo's defense, he had missed two games after suffering a high-ankle sprain during Week 2, and the injury was clearly impacting his ability to throw the football and move around. Garoppolo probably shouldn't have been playing in the first place, a debate that emerged after the Dolphins routed the 49ers 43-17. While the media has resumed speculating how to replace the 49ers quarterback, Garoppolo's teammates still have confidence in his ability to lead the team from the NFC West
