Things don't last long in the NFL. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan knows that. He's lived it his whole life.
Shanahan is the son of a former NFL coach. Aside from a lengthy tenure with the Denver Broncos, his father, Mike Shanahan, never spent more than four consecutive years in one city during his 30 years in the NFL.
When Kyle Shanahan started coaching in the league, he adopted the same lifestyle. It was two years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, four with the Houston Texans, another four with Washington, one season with the Cleveland Browns, and then two with the Atlanta Falcons before being named the 49ers head coach.
Shanahan is in his fourth year with San Francisco, so you can imagine his relief when the 49ers locked him up to a contract extension to keep him in the Bay Area through the 2025 season.
"It was a huge accomplishment in our house to where it didn't hit me until we got it," Shanahan told reporters during a Monday-afternoon press conference via Zoom. "My wife, she joined this when we got married at 25. I never lived anywhere in my life longer than four years. I tied that a couple of places. I did it once in Houston. I did it once in Washington.
"My dad coached in Denver for a long time, but we moved back there three different times, getting fired and rehired and stuff.
"With this, my family kind of celebrated a little bit because the first time I told my kids, depending on how this year goes, but I feel like we're going to pass the four-year mark after that. That was a personal accomplishment for us that the Shanahan household was happy with."
The 49ers also gave general manager John Lynch an extension, keeping him married to the team and Shanahan through the 2024 season.
"I know I speak for Kyle and our families; we're incredibly grateful for the commitment that [the 49ers have] shown," Lynch said.

Brock Purdy set a San Francisco 49ers single-season record in 2023, throwing for 4,280 passing yards. Many of those yards came on passes to his top target, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a team-leading and career-high 1,342 receiving yards.
Purdy and Aiyuk have developed great chemistry on the football field, and the quarterback would like to build upon that for years to come. However, that is out of his control, and Aiyuk's future is in the hands of the front office.
