Best routes for rookie NFL wide receivers: Why CeeDee Lamb's out, Brandon Aiyuk's screen are unstoppable

It's right there in the title of Seth Walder's latest feature for ESPN. "Unstoppable." That word is high praise for a wide receiver, even if you are just looking at one specific route in his arsenal.

As the title of the ESPN feature suggests, the analyst took a look at 16 rookie receivers from this year's draft class and identified each's best and most productive routes over the past two seasons of college football. Walder also examined how each's skill might contribute to his new NFL team.

The San Francisco 49ers were so impressed by Arizona State's Brandon Aiyuk that they traded up to No. 25 overall to select him.

"He can play the X, he can play the Z, he can play the F," head coach Kyle Shanahan said of Aiyuk after drafting him. "He's got the speed to get on top. He's got the quickness to play in the slot. He's got the toughness to go over in the middle. And the guy is just completely committed, to me, to being as good as God ever intended him to be."

Walder identified the screen and quick routes as Aiyuk's best, saying that many of the 49ers' attempts on those types of plays will likely be diverted to Aiyuk this season.

"One has to imagine coach Kyle Shanahan will scheme up ways to get the rookie receiver the ball quickly to take advantage of his run-after-the-catch ability," Walder wrote. "Among qualifying receivers, Aiyuk ranked second in college football in yards after catch per reception over the past two seasons, behind only Alabama's DeVonta Smith."

Screens aren't Aiyuk's only strength, though. Walder was also impressed by what he saw out of the young receiver during his 17 post routes, which he says were run with "astronomical efficiency." Aiyuk actually led college football in yards per attempt on those routes, if you accept the small sample size.

By David Bonilla

The Jacksonville Jaguars were reportedly interested in trading for star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. However, the San Francisco 49ers' asking price of the No. 17 overall pick plus a player was seemingly too high for the team. Now, it appears another AFC team might be trying to pry Aiyuk away from the West Coast. Andrew Fillipponi of Pittsburgh-area radio station 93.7 The Fan reports that the Steelers are looking to work out a deal with the 49ers for the receiver. "Sources: The Steelers have looked into 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk," Fillipponi wrote on social media. "He's entering the last year of his contract. Steelers would have to execute a sign and trade. But they've shown

49ers insider: If Brandon Aiyuk is traded, it will be before the draft

By David Bonilla
Mar 20

Brandon Aiyuk appears open to the possibility of playing elsewhere in 2024. If the San Francisco 49ers can't negotiate a favorable long-term deal with their star receiver, he knows someone else will. However, the 49ers primarily aim to retain Aiyuk for the long haul. The team exercised the fifth-year option on his contract but seeks to secure an extension before he retakes the field. General manager John Lynch recently praised Aiyuk, calling him one of his "favorite guys around the building." "He's a competitor. He's a warrior," Lynch added. "He plays with such physicality, also with grace, in the way some of the positions his body can get into. And then he's got a flair

How valuable is Brandon Aiyuk to the 49ers?

By Al Sacco
Mar 22

Brandon Aiyuk couldn't have chosen a better time to have a career year. In his fourth season in the league, the San Francisco 49ers standout wide receiver set career highs in receiving yards (1,342), yards per reception (17.9), yards per target (12.8) and catch percentage (71.4%). What might be most impressive is that Aiyuk's receiving yard total was good for seventh in the NFL despite him being 36th in targets (105) and 31st in catches (75). But even with a breakout season in his rear view mirror, the question remains: Do John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan feel as if Aiyuk is worth a massive contract extension? On the surface you'd think the answer to that question would be yes, but the truth is things aren't always that simple when you're dealing with a
