Jimmy Garoppolo figures to be the starting quarterback when the San Francisco 49ers take the field against the Detroit Lions in Week 1. At some point, though, whether it be this year or in the more distant future, Trey Lance will take the reins. After all, the Niners traded up to the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft to acquire the former North Dakota State star quarterback. The 49ers are holding a three-day rookie minicamp this weekend. Lance is the only quarterback participating. Garoppolo will enter the mix on May 24, when the team begins organized team activities. "Trey Lance is a guy that made perfect sense." There is some uncertainty surrounding when fans will get a good look at Lance running the 49ers offense. CEO Jed York told NBC Sports Bay Area this week that ownership is comfortable paying Jimmy Garoppolo's

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch was at his daughter's school tennis match when his phone rang. The Miami Dolphins were still mulling over the trade offer he had presented on March 4 for the No. 3 overall pick. San Francisco was willing to surrender its first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 to swap spots in 2021. It had been weeks since Lynch presented the offer. The Dolphins were very interested but needed a little more motivation. "We weren't going to officially do the deal with that," Miami general manager Chris Grier told Peter King of NBC Sports, "because we knew the importance of that third pick." The Dolphins
