Tom Compton: Pretty wild to see how Kyle Shanahan’s offense has evolved

May 15, 2020 at 7:00 AM--

The 49ers signed guard Tom Compton as a free agent this offseason and familiarity had a lot to do with making the deal happen. Compton played for 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan when Shanahan was an assistant in Washington and Atlanta, which he said made it "a no-brainer for me" to sign with the team [more]

Silver: Some believe 49ers could draft Justin Fields, taking Shanahan's offense to 'another dimension'

As is the case with many analysts, NFL Network's Marc Ross sees Justin Fields of Ohio State as the better prospect when compared to Mac Jones of Alabama. The former Buckeye will hold a second pro day next week, but Ross feels the quarterback has already shown everything he needs to show to NFL teams. "If teams, right now, are still trying to figure out if Justin Fields is the guy, then they've already missed the evaluation, or he's not their guy," Ross told Andrew Siciliano, Bucky Brooks, and Mike Silver on NFL Network. Ross notes that with teams likely already having all of the information they need on the quarterback prospects, it is admirable that Fields is holding another pro day when he has little to gain. "This is just him being a competitor

Former 49ers receiver doesn't see the value in drafting Mac Jones at No. 3

Count former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Torrey Smith among those who would question Mac Jones being the draft selection at No. 3 overall. It is important to note that Smith likes the Alabama quarterback and describes him as a "solid player," but is he a prospect worth trading future first-round picks and a third-rounder? Smith doesn't see it. "I promised to never be the former player that is a hater but I swear I have a hard time understanding the 49ers would trade all of that for Mac Jones," wrote Smith in a tweet. "I like Mac and I think he will be a solid player but as a prospect I don't see the value in 'mortgaging the future' for

Lombardi claims 49ers' John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan disagree on which QB to draft

It's been a while since we've had a report of disparity between general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. We were probably overdue. Michael Lombardi of The Athletic is the latest to claim the two San Francisco 49ers decision-makers can't agree. This time, the difference of opinions surrounds what to do with the No. 3 overall pick. More specifically, it has to do with which quarterback to select—since we all know that is the plan. "Someone told me yesterday—not an NFL head coach—but someone told me that there is a conversation in the building that Kyle wants X and maybe Lynch wants Y," Lombardi said during an interview on SiriusXM's The Rap with Patrick Meagher. "Look, I'm going to be very clear here—Kyle is going to make this pick. ...

NFL exec on 49ers: "I just don't buy Kyle Shanahan moving up all the way to three for Mac Jones"

Mike Sando of The Athletic has been doing his rounds around the league, asking about the San Francisco 49ers trading up to the No. 3 overall pick to select a quarterback. Even with the top two picks considered a lock—Trevor Lawrence to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Zach Wilson to the New York Jets—no one is really certain about the 49ers' plan. There is speculation—a lot of it. Because of his history with quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins and Matt Ryan, many feel San Francisco traded up for Mac Jones of Alabama. Two NFL executives who spoke to Sando can see that happening. Whether or not they agree with the potential selection is another story. "I've heard they are really seriously thinking of Mac Jones and it would blow my mind,"
