It may sound like Mac Jones of Alabama is headed to the San Francisco 49ers with the No. 3 overall pick, but at least one NFL Media analyst isn't buying it and has the team going in another direction. Bucky Brooks released his latest mock draft and has Trey Lance headed to the Bay Area. "The North Dakota State product gives Kyle Shanahan a raw -- but talented -- dual-threat playmaker who has tremendous upside," wrote Brooks in his brief analysis of the pick. As expected, Brooks has the first two selections being Trevor Lawrence to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Zach Wilson to the New York Jets. The Lance selection means quarterbacks

Trey Lance, 49ers coaches had no idea who would be the draft pick at No. 3

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel had no idea that Trey Lance of North Dakota State would be the pick at No. 3. None of the 49ers coaches did. That's how secretive head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch were being with the selection. Lance didn't even know until minutes before hearing his name called by Commissioner Roger Goodell. That's what he told NFL Network's Melissa Stark onstage. The 49ers traded for the No. 3 overall pick on March 26, giving up, along with a future third-round pick, first-rounders in the next two drafts. Since then, there has been much speculation surrounding what the team planned to do. Finally, the wait for Niner fans is over, and Lance is the organization's quarterback of the

NFL insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport joined NFL Network on Thursday and discussed the looming quarterback question that the San Francisco 49ers have to answer next week during the draft. Will it be Mac Jones of Alabama, as many are predicting? Or will the team ruin everyone's mock drafts and take Justin Fields of Ohio State or Trey Lance of North Dakota State? While Jones is viewed as more pro-ready right now, Fields and Lance are viewed as more athletic and having higher ceilings. "But what Mac Jones brings to the table are two characteristics that Kyle Shanahan really highly values," Pelissero explained. "He is a quick

RB Trey Sermon is ready to be a good fit in 49ers backfield

Don't expect running back Trey Sermon to have a hard time fitting in once he starts his career with the San Francisco 49ers. Sermon, who the 49ers traded up to acquire in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, comes to San Francisco with experience in the style of rushing attack he'll be a part of in the NFL. That's because he ran some of it in college at Ohio State and did some research on the 49ers before the start of the 2020 season in order to familiarize himself with what he'd be doing at Ohio State after deciding to transfer there from the University of Oklahoma. "I'm pretty familiar with them," Sermon told reporters after the 49ers selected him Friday night. "I knew they ran outside zone a lot because I studied it when I was coming to Ohio State, because I
