ESPN ranks one 49ers defensive unit as the best in the NFL, another as one to watch

Mike Clay of ESPN continued his annual tradition of ranking each positional group for all 32 NFL teams, looking at 10 key offensive and defensive positions. During the process, he also commented on each category's best, shakiest, and "on the rise" groups, along with the ones to watch. The strength of the San Francisco 49ers defense last season — its edge rushers — came in as Clay's best in the game when compared to those from around the league. "Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead and Dee Ford combine to form the league's best edge rushing trio," wrote Clay. "Bosa and Armstead combined for 19.0 sacks and 105 pass-rush wins

John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan meet with George Kittle, optimistic extension will get done

The San Francisco 49ers signed a Pro Bowl tight end today. It wasn't the tight end everyone has been awaiting news about, though. The team signed veteran Jordan Reed to a one-year deal and continues to work toward a contract extension with the All-Pro tight end it drafted in 2017 — George Kittle. Four 49ers named among CBS Sports' top NFL players by jersey number

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports this week listed, in his opinion, the best current NFL players for every jersey number. Four San Francisco 49ers appeared on the list. Eight teams were represented more, including the Baltimore Ravens, who led the list with nine players.
