49ers climb NFL.com power rankings following draft, still sit behind two NFC West teams

Power rankings in May don't mean a lot, especially when you throw in figuring out how an unproven crop of rookies will impact a team's future success. "The NFL draft and the Power Rankings don't mix," wrote NFL.com contributor Dan Hanzus. That didn't stop him from trying. Hanzus released his latest power rankings, his first since a post-free-agency version in March, and has the San Francisco 49ers jumping up three spots to No. 9. The Niners' draft features the No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance of North Dakota State. The team also added two offensive linemen in Aaron Banks and Jaylon Moore, two running backs in Trey Sermon and Elijah

Schefter: 49ers believe Trey Lance is 'closer to playing this season' than Mac Jones

Adam Schefter is among those who spearheaded the rampant speculation that the San Francisco 49ers were likely to select Mac Jones of Alabama. Of course, along the way, he acknowledged that was speculation based on what he heard from around the league. No one outside of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch knew what the team's decision-makers were thinking. Schefter repeatedly made that clear. One of the criticisms of Lance was the former Bison's inexperience. The 49ers kept Jimmy Garoppolo, and the plan is for the veteran to be the team's starter for the upcoming season. If Lance doesn't play, that means the rookie will have missed nearly the entirety of two consecutive seasons, with his last in-game action being in a non-conference game on

La Canfora: Strong expectation among NFL GMs that 49ers try to trade Jimmy Garoppolo this week

The San Francisco 49ers have repeatedly stated that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains in the team's plans for 2021. That would mean a rookie sitting behind him for at least the upcoming season, which makes sense. The 49ers are built to win now and have shown they can do so with Garoppolo at the helm. However, his durability has become a concern after missing 23 games over the past three seasons. Maybe that won't remain the plan. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that there is a "very strong" expectation around the league that San Francisco will make an effort to trade Garoppolo before or even during the draft. "Timing isn't great with 5 QBs about to go in 1st round, but Jimmy G's future there now seen as bleak," wrote La Canfora via
