John Lynch denies report that 49ers looked into trading Ahkello Witherspoon: 'That was never a discussion'

Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported on Friday that the San Francisco 49ers had looked into trading fourth-year cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon this past week. "At one point during the week, the 49ers were looking into trading Witherspoon, and Witherspoon was aware of this," wrote Barrows. "For one reason or another, that plan was scrapped." General manager John Lynch, while speaking with reporters via a conference call on Sunday, denied that such discussions ever took place. "Well, it's not true," Lynch said. "... 49ers activate WR Deebo Samuel from the NFI list

Deebo Samuel becomes the second San Francisco 49ers wide receiver this week to be activated from the non-football injury list. Richie James was activated on Thursday after rehabbing from a broken wrist suffered in June. His missed time was initially expected to run into October. The 49ers activated Samuel on Saturday, making him available for Week 1. He has been recovering from a Jones fracture he sustained during a player-organized practice in June. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has been optimistic that Samuel would be available for the team's Week 1 contest against the Cardinals on September 13.
