49ers’ punter Wishnowsky has epic tackle

Aug 19, 2019 at 11:40 PM--

DENVER -- Most NFL punters only want to make contact with the ball. Mitch Wishnowsky is different: He also enjoys contact with ball-carriers. The 49ers rookie punter, a 6-foot-2, 220-pounder who grew up playing Australian rules football, had the most memorable hit of the 49ers' 24-15 preseason win over the Broncos on Monday night. After kicking off in the third quarter, Wishnowky ran downfield and leveled returner Devonte Jackson at the 22-yard line with a form tackle that sent the 49ers' sideline into hysterics. Most kickers hang back and serve as the last line of defense on kickoffs. So what was the Australian Assassin doing? "I hang back and then if there's a gap to fill I'll just run in there," Wishnowsky said. "Sort of half expecting him to sort of (side step) me or something. He didn't. So it worked out." After the game, 49ers wide receiver Trent Taylor retweeted a video of Wishnowsky's tackle and added: "Thunda From Down Unda." Wishnowsky appreciated his teammates' reaction in the moment. "A couple of high-fives and things on the sidelines," he said. "It was nice the team got around me." Twitter: @Eric_Branch

Could the 49ers trade up in the draft for a top tackle?

By David Bonilla
Apr 11

The San Francisco 49ers are likely hoping that a top offensive lineman drops to them at No. 31 in the first round of this month's draft. Fans would like to see the team add someone to compete with Colton McKivitz for the right tackle spot and potentially take over for Trent Williams when the future Hall of Famer decides to retire. Having two studs bookending the offensive line would go a long way in protecting franchise quarterback Brock Purdy. While tackle may be the first-round target, depending on how the first 30 selections play out, San Francisco might have to trade up to get a genuinely impactful

PFF mock draft has 49ers adding cornerback with 'unique fluidity and size'

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

Analyst Steve Palazzolo unveiled a first-round mock draft for Pro Football Focus, attempting to forecast the selections for each NFL team within the top 32 picks. While the San Francisco 49ers concentrated on strengthening the defensive line in free agency, Palazzolo envisions the team continuing to fortify that side of the ball. In his mock draft, Palazzolo predicts that the 49ers will select former Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa with the No. 31 overall pick. "Tampa's unique fluidity and size for a cornerback make him worthy of a top-75 pick," reads the analysis from Pro Football Focus' big board. "If he can clean up his footwork, he can

Schrager mock draft has 49ers adding 'universally liked and respected' receiver

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

With only nine days remaining until the start of the 2024 NFL Draft, Good Morning Football's Peter Schrager revealed his first mock draft of the year. While most might expect the San Francisco 49ers to target an offensive lineman, Schrager has the team bolstering its wide receiver corps with an SEC talent. Schrager has the 49ers using the No. 31 overall pick to select former Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey, whose 2023 campaign with the Bulldogs was limited by back and ankle injuries. "McConkey in the first round? Yes," Schrager wrote. "Above guys like Troy Franklin and Keon Coleman? Perhaps. I've spoken to a
