49ers’ practice report: CB Verrett takes a step in comeback; WR Taylor shines

The report from the 49ers' sixth practice of training camp. WEATHER: 70 degrees and sunny at the start of the 10:15 a.m. practice LENGTH OF PRACTICE: 1 hour, 57 minutes SCHEDULE: The 49ers will return to practice at 10:15 a.m. Saturday INJURIES: Edge rusher Dee Ford did not practice a day after Kyle Shanahan said he was dealing with knee tendinitis. CB Ahkello Witherspoon left the field with a trainer because of what the 49ers termed a "glute" issue during individual drills and did not return. DT DeForest Buckner (toe), G Joshua Garnett (finger), FS Jimmie Ward (collarbone), DL Kapron Lewis-Moore (groin) and WR Max McCaffrey (undisclosed) did not practice. RB Jerick McKinnon (ACL), C Weston Richburg (knee) and tight end Garrett Celek (back) remain on the PUP list. COMEBACK CB: With Witherspoon out, CB Jason Verrett took some first-team snaps. His most notable play came when he had blanket coverage on WR Marquise Goodwin on the third snap of team drills and forced an incompletion on a short pass from QB Jimmy Garoppolo. Verrett, who is coming back from a torn Achilles and hasn't played in a regular-season game since September 2017, was congratulated by a host of defensive teammates...

The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team. On Wednesday, Chat Sports contributor Chase Senior reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers were "aggressively pursuing" San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. He further stated that the Steelers are confident they can finalize a deal for the star player. Draft Watch: Western Kentucky WR Malachi Corley visiting 49ers on Wednesday

The San Francisco 49ers are hosting several draft prospects this week as the deadline for pre-draft visits draws near. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the team will host former Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley on Wednesday. Corley is expected to be a Day 2 pick. San Francisco owns two selections on Day 2—the No. 63 overall pick in the second round and the No. 94 overall pick in the third round. Currently, the receiver is visiting with the Seattle Seahawks.
