NFL quarterback turned CBS analyst, Tony Romo, is taking part in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament this week. Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group caught up with the former Dallas Cowboys star and asked about the expectations surrounding the San Francisco 49ers this year.

Romo sounds eager to see if the 49ers can finally put together a winning season following a disastrous four-win campaign last year.

"The 49ers defensive line looks to be outstanding," Romo told Inman.

The team added veteran Dee Ford and rookie Nick Bosa to bolster its inept pass rush — outside of Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. The defensive front looks much-improved on paper. Now it's time for the unit to put it all together.

Then you have the expectations surrounding the 49ers' star quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. While he is considered a veteran because of his six seasons in the NFL, Garoppolo has just ten starts under his belt — not even a full season's worth of games. Expectations were high heading into 2019, but fans' hopes were dashed when the quarterback went down in Week 3 with a torn ACL.

Everyone, including Romo, is still waiting to see what the 49ers have in Garoppolo and if he can take head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense to the next level.

"And so if Jimmy's able to play a full season, which I think everyone's excited about seeing, if that happens, hopefully, he can play great football and you'll see the 49ers win a lot of games," Romo said. "If you can have a great D-line and you can have really good strong quarterback play, it's a difficult combination."

Romo also had some thoughts on the other Bay Area team, the Oakland Raiders. Click here to read Inman's full feature over at The Mercury News.

49ers players report to training camp on July 26, and the team kicks off its regular season on September 8 with a road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Romo will have an opportunity to see Garoppolo and the 49ers in person when CBS carries the team's Week 3 home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Leonard Floyd eager to pair up with Nick Bosa along 49ers D-line

By David Bonilla
Mar 21

Leonard Floyd is eager to begin working with his new San Francisco 49ers coaches and teammates. In free agency, the team signed the former Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams pass rusher to line up opposite star defensive end Nick Bosa, providing a boost to a defensive front that was inconsistent in 2023. Floyd matched his career-high with 10.5 sacks last season with the Bills, a statistic that would have tied with Bosa for the 49ers' team-high in 2023. In a recent interview with team reporter Lindsey Pallares, Floyd was asked how he believes his skillset complements Bosa's. "I believe our skill sets will complement each other well," Floyd responded. "We both been guys who've

49ers see impending mega-deal for Brock Purdy as a 'good problem'

By David Bonilla
Mar 27

The San Francisco 49ers are actively working to sign wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to a contract extension, aiming to maintain their talented young core of players. The team has reached agreements with star players during each of the last four offseasons, securing George Kittle in 2020, Fred Warner in 2021, Deebo Samuel in 2022, and Nick Bosa in 2023. Another key contributor poised for a new deal next offseason is quarterback Brock Purdy. Over the last couple of years, the 49ers have been in the unique position of not having to pay much money (relatively) to stock their quarterback room while reaping the benefits of superb play from their starting signal-caller. However,

Jimmy Garoppolo explains why he signed with 49ers' division rival

By David Bonilla
Mar 20

Jimmy Garoppolo is back in the NFC West after signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback recently explained his decision to join the division rival after a one-season stint with the Las Vegas Raiders. "Obviously good players all around," Garoppolo said, per ESPN. "That's a big part of it. Talking to [head coach] Sean [McVay] on the phone, him just running me through offense and things that he had in mind, it really became appetizing. And I know a lot of the coaches here, so a lot of familiarity in that aspect. And then having played against the Rams a lot in my career, I've seen a lot of good things

Details emerge on 49ers' 1-year deals with Jon Feliciano and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles

Mar 19

Offensive lineman Jon Feliciano and linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles recently re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers on one-year deals. OverTheCap.com has revealed the contract information for both deals. Feliciano signed a contract that includes the minimum base salary for a player with eight accrued seasons of experience—$1.21 million. Flannigan-Fowles' base salary is slightly higher, at about $1.77 million. Feliciano is scheduled to count about $2.28 million against the 2024 salary cap, while Flannigan-Fowles is slated to consume almost $1.3 million. The linebacker's reduced impact is due to the 49ers using a portion of up to $1.45 million of salary that won't count against the salary cap for veteran players. The 49ers are paying Feliciano a
