The poor punter: 49ers make Vogel one of seven roster cuts

Poor Justin Vogel. For the second straight year, the punter who was a Pro Bowl alternate as a rookie in 2017 has been waived after his team drafted a punter to replace him. On Monday, two days after selecting Utah's Mitch Wishnowsky in the fourth round, the 49ers waived Vogel, 25, whom they signed March 19. Last year, the Packers waived Vogel six days after selecting JK Scott in the fifth round of the draft. "We liked Vogel," general manager John Lynch said Saturday. "He was a legit punter who had punted with success in this league. I think Green Bay had a punter that they really felt highly of -- J.K. Scott -- and so they drafted him in the fifth round, and Vogel was out (of) there and sat out for a year. When we had a void there, we signed Vogel. But we were hopeful that we could target Wishnowsky." In 2017, Vogel had the best net average (41.6 yards) by a Packers punter since 1976 and ranked seventh in the NFL in that category. He was 23rd in gross average (44.4), 29th in punts inside the 20-yard line and his two touchbacks tied for the third fewest among punters with at least 50 kicks.
