49ers scout on hand to watch WR Jazz Ferguson at Northwestern State’s pro day

Mar 20, 2019 at 3:53 PM--

San Francisco 49ers southwest area scout John Stevenson attended Northwestern State's pro day where wide receiver Jazz Ferguson was the main attraction, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

"Ferguson is an intriguing late-round prospect who transferred from LSU, where he was suspended following a failed drug test and became academically ineligible," wrote Branch. "Ferguson, 6-foot-5 and 228 pounds, had an impressive 40-yard dash (4.45 seconds) at the NFL combine after he had 66 catches for 1,117 yards and 13 touchdowns last year."

Ferguson had 66 catches for a school-record 1,117 yards with a school single-season record 13 touchdown receptions this past season. He was the Southland Conference offensive player of the year and earned second-team STATS FCS All-America Team honors.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, the 6-foot-5 and 227-pound Ferguson had a 40-time of 4.45 seconds, a vertical jump of 37 inches, a broad jump of 123 inches, completed the three-cone drill in 7.25 seconds, eight reps in the bench press, and a 20-yard shuttle time of 4.59 seconds. Other measurables for Ferguson include an arm length of 34 1/4 inches and hands that measure 9 1/4 inches.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, who compares Ferguson to Ramses Barden, wrote the following about Ferguson within his scouting report:

"Former four-star recruit who began his career at LSU but took flight in his lone season at Northwestern State after transferring. Ferguson is a big target with instinctive feel for body positioning, which tilts contested catches in his favor. He's too reliant upon his physical gifts and needs more schooling and route polish, but he could find a back-end roster spot with a chance to work his way up the depth chart with time."
