Source: Oft-injured CB Verrett to visit 49ers

Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett, a Fairfield native whose NFL career has included a Pro Bowl berth and a slew of leg injuries, will pay the 49ers a free-agent visit on Wednesday, a league source said. Verrett, a 2014 first-round pick, has played in just five games the past three season due to two surgeries on his left knee and a torn Achilles. He's played in just 25 of 64 games in his career, but was a Pro Bowl selection in 2015, the only season in which he played more than six games. Last year, Verrett tore his Achilles during a conditioning test before the first practice of training camp. He last played in an NFL game on Sept. 11, 2017. His visit with the 49ers will include a physical. Verrett, who spent a season at Santa Rosa Junior College before transferring to TCU, has played both slot cornerback and outside cornerback in the NFL. At 5-foot-10 and 188 pounds, he's smaller than the outside cornerbacks the 49ers have preferrred the past two seasons. However, the 49ers don't appear to have a pressing need for a slot corner: K'Waun Williams has capably manned the slot the past two seasons and he could compete with D.J. Reed for that role in 2019. CBS Sports draft writer Josh Edwards reports that the San Francisco 49ers will host former Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley on a pre-draft visit in Santa Clara in April.
