As quarterback Matthew Stafford was trying to rally the Lions from a 17-point, fourth-quarter deficit Sunday, the 49ers made a defensive change in hopes of stopping his momentum. They inserted cornerback Jimmie Ward for starter Ahkello Witherspoon, who played just three of the final 15 defensive snaps. "That was crunch time," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday of the 30-27 win over Detroit. "Going against a real good offense there. Stafford's got a great chance to get back in the game with how good he is. And just watching the game right there, we felt getting Jimmie in helped us.

Analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic grades former Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa as a second or third-round draft pick and ranks him 55th overall on his big board. Pro Football Focus, however, holds a higher opinion of the young defensive back. The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor.
