From special teams hopeful to surprising 49ers star: Rookie Elijah Mitchell grateful for the opportunity

By David Bonilla

In August, San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Elijah Mitchell said he was willing to do "anything and everything" just to make the roster. As a sixth-round pick, and the team's last selection in this year's draft, nothing was guaranteed for him. Mitchell wasn't even the first running back drafted by the 49ers. The team selected Trey Sermon in the third round. For Mitchell, that meant doing whatever was asked of him just to ensure that his time with the 49ers didn't come to a close. "Like I said, I'm willing to do anything and everything just to be on this team," Mitchell said. "So, [special teams] is going to be one of my roles but also being a

The NFL announced that San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell has been nominated for this week's FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week award. The other nominees are Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette (100 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 17 attempts against the Colts) and Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon (165 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries against the Steelers). In April, San Francisco made Mitchell a sixth-round draft pick out of Louisiana. He leads the team with 693 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 143 carries through eight game appearances and seven starts this

49ers preparing for 'toughest game of the year' against Seahawks

By Kirk Larrabee

Things have been uncharacteristically bad for the Seattle Seahawks lately. After starting the season 2-2, with one of those wins coming on the road against the 49ers in Week 4, the Seahawks have struggled as much as any team in the NFL, losing six of their last seven games. The offense has been problematic while quarterback Russell Wilson hasn't found his top form since returning from finger surgery, and at this point it seems likely they'll miss the postseason for only the second time since 2012. The 49ers have been moving in the opposite direction, winning their last three games after a 3-5 start while picking up momentum towards a possible playoff run. But despite the way things have been trending, the 49ers aren't getting overconfident at all about their

John Lynch says Frank Gore loves 49ers' Deebo Samuel as a running back

By David Bonilla

On Wednesday morning, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch joined KNBR. A former NFL running back and 49ers fan favorite, Frank Gore, was with Lynch in team CEO Jed York's suite this past Sunday during the team's 30-10 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He remains close with the York family and continues to be a big fan of his former organization. Gore was treated to watching a 79-yard, one-touchdown rushing performance from Deebo Samuel — a wide receiver. That came on just eight attempts, meaning the receiver averaged nearly 10 yards per carry. Gore believes Samuel is so impressive that the third-year wideout is good enough to be a great running back. "He loves Deebo as a running back," Lynch said. "He probably feels that if we
