Recently on Niners Live, I made a strong case why Marquise Goodwin deserves a contract extension. Now I'll try to make an even stronger case for why kicker Robbie Gould deserves a contract extension.

The San Francisco 49ers and General Manager John Lynch wasted no time in signing free agent kicker Robbie Gould, who stands at 6-0 and weighs 190 lbs., to replace former Forty-Niners' kicker Phil Dawson during the 2017 offseason. Gould, who's now thirty-five years young, heads into his second year of a two-year deal worth $4 million with one million being fully guaranteed (overthecap.com).

Robbie Gould is most notably recognized by the time he's spent with the Chicago Bears (11 seasons), where he showed consistency and poise as a kicker. With Chicago, he managed to make 276 of his 323 field goal attempts with a career 85.4 field goal percentage, making him the Chicago Bears' franchise leader in field goals made.

Why field goal kicker Robbie Gould Deserves a Contract Extension

  • Gould made 95.1% of his field goals (39 out of 41) which is a franchise record surpassing Joe Nedney's previous high of 92.9 percent in 2005.
  • Gould scored 145 points on the season, which is third-most in the NFL in points scored. Gould's ranking comes in as the third highest by a 49ers' player since David Akers in 2011.
  • Gould converted 17 of 18 field goals from 40 to 49 yards and went four-for-four from 50+ yards out.
  • The Forty-Niners' offense averaged 20.7 points per game. However, Gould accounted for nine of those 20.7 points per game. The Forty-Niners' offense ranks 27th in the NFL in scoring (touchdown %).
  • Gould had two game-winning field goals against the Chicago Bears and the Tennessee Titans. Against the Houston Texans Gould accounted for 14 of the 26 points scored to beat the 16 points generated by the Texans.
  • On his 35th birthday, Gould was named NFC's Special Teams' Player of the Week for going 5 out of 5 against the Bears (via Sacramento Bee).
  • Gould was honored with the Perry/Yonamine Award which represents the Forty-Niner player who exhibits an exceptional commitment to promoting unity within the team and in their community (via the team's website).
  • Gould has clearly outplayed his contract (Phil Dawson signed a 2-year, $6 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals) and he's 42 years old. Important to note: Dawson made only 80% of his field goals converting (32 of 40).
  • Gould is all about the culture of winning and brotherhood.
  • Gould's 2017 statistics (seen above) were Pro Bowl worthy (23 consecutive made field goals).

Allow me to leave you with this

The Gould Standard of Robbie Gould's work ethic, production, consistency, and efficiency really can't begin to be just measured by stats. Gould has to be measured by his ability to breathe a breath of fresh confidence in his fellow teammates; knowing he's a clutch performer in the most pressuring situations. And that, my friends, is the reason why Robbie Gould deserves a contract extension, and to be honest (in my opinion), it's why he was the Forty-Niners unanimous MVP.

Robbie Gould is the second most valued player on the team this last year scoring consistent points..... And He got better when Jimmy G got on the field, (as if he wasn't an already consistent kicker this season.) Sign him... Jimmy watched and learned from the Patriots a good QB needs a consistent kicker. Jimmy Will move the ball, it not always going to be a TD, but a QB and Kicker on most drives scoring points is dangerous... pay Robby

Mike Silver on how Deebo Samuel's contract might be the starting point for a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco
Apr 16

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. Legendary columnist Mike Silver joined

49ers analysis: The pros and cons of a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco
Apr 12

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have made it clear that they want WR Brandon Aiyuk to be a part of the San Francisco 49ers for the foreseeable future. It appears Aiyuk also wants to get something done, but all indications are that he isn't willing to take a hometown discount and the likelihood of playing on the last year of his deal without a holdout or trade request is slim. Simply put: Aiyuk wants to get paid. It's hard to blame him. A player's time in the NFL can be short and it takes just one hit to end a career. So, whether it's with the Niners or another team, Aiyuk will squeeze every penny out of what will most likely be his most lucrative professional contract. But is spending that much on a receiver a wise move for the franchise? There are a

Brandon Aiyuk unfollows 49ers on Instagram amid contract negotiations

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has unfollowed the San Francisco 49ers on Instagram. Is it time for the fanbase to panic? Probably not. NFL players have made similar moves in comparable contract negotiation situations, such as Deebo Samuel's actions in 2022. However, in Samuel's case, the offseason drama escalated to the point that he requested a trade. So far, no such request has been made by Aiyuk or his representatives—that we know of. While Aiyuk has unfollowed the 49ers on Instagram (h/t Jose Sanchez of SI), he continues to follow the team on X (formerly

Brock Purdy sends clear message to Brandon Aiyuk amid contract talks with 49ers

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will be present today as the team reports for the start of its offseason program. Purdy was a little early, as he hosted a youth football camp over the weekend. Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group spoke to the 49ers quarterback during the event and asked him about one of his teammates, Brandon Aiyuk. The star wide receiver is currently in contract extension negotiations with the 49ers, and the team has emphasized keeping him around for the foreseeable future as an offseason priority. Purdy has
