QB Brock Purdy Thread

The other one he tried to fit it over the top which was completely unnecessary.

Pretty bad decisions on both and got lucky.

The rest was pretty good. The first pass of the game I was not sure if it sailed or was a throwaway. He settled in well after though.

This was a point of argument between my father and I. I believe it was a throwaway. You can see Brock come off his first couple of reads and look to his checkdown (CMC), who is covered at that point, so he just just throws it away and moves on to the next down.
Brock showed why he can be great with that TD to Kittle..and a few other plays as well. There was one where he evaded the pass rush right up the middle, with a subtle shoulder shift.... stepped up and made a great pass...

but this game also showed he hasn't learned s**t with his time off watching from the sidelines. Still careless with the ball when it's not necessary. Luckily it worked out this game because the Cards were totally fine do themselves in.

I'm hoping this game was just him knocking off some rust. There was one shot of Kyle talking to Brock when he was sitting on the bench, and Brock had a look of "yeah I know I shouldn't be doing that". So we'll see if that is the case, because if he starts getting it all together...we will be set, and finally the running game might open up as well...and we'll be even more deadly. Like old times.

I thought Brock made a couple (at least two) bad decisions that put the ball in harm's way. One was an inaccurate throw on a Dig to Pearsall(?), one was a bad decision. Luckily those were dropped. The one near the red zone where he scrambled to his left was a very unnecessary risk. Outside of those I thought he looked good for being his first action in several weeks.

Yeah, there was a throw or two where I was like, whatcha doin'? I think one I saw he could have gone to a receiver not as far out but decided to go with Pearsall? That was triple sandwiched by three defenders and almost got picked. Iirc. But overall, happy with the comeback game.
He looked awesome out there despite the 2 would be picks (if Lenoir or Minkah Fitz were the Tards DBs in coverage)... I expected a little rust and a couple of head scratchers, but he played great. I hope he does well vs Panthers because it won't be a gimme
As others have said there were a couple bonehead throws, but some beautiful throws, as well. Hopefully the bonehead ones can be corrected and chalk them up to rust. Won't be able to do that against better competition..

Hard disagree there. I think this game showed he 100% has learned to adjust his game from watching Mac. He's not going to stop being Brock completely but I believe all the questionable throws were at least on key downs and he wasn't forcing anything on early downs. He didn't even try to make anything of the busted play understanding the score and situation and just went down. Brock from week 1 would've tried to make a play of that 100%.

There is a line to playing QB so safe that you cut down on the potential of your offense and being too aggressive and turnover prone. I don't want Brock losing all of his aggressiveness but he's got to save it for the right situations. Give your guys a chance sometimes. Other times just get rid of it.

I think this game was 100% a step in the right direction…but I also got a vibe like he's a tad hesitant to run the ball cuz that toe is still on his mind.

I think with Purdy you have to live with the dumb throws. I dunno, he just does it at least once or twice every game no matter what. I feel like he does it more now as time goes on than he did as a rookie and in '23. Besides the ones that were (almost) picked there were the passes to JJ and CMC which were pretty unadvisavle too but luckily caught. Its just what it is with him and its probably not going anywhere.

To me, I wanna see him get better in the 4th quarter of close games. That's where I wanna see improvement and not throwing stupid passes in those critical situations.

Thank you. Didn't want to be the one to bring up these passes but trust me. Was on my mind. Especially the hospital ball to CMC.
For those of you who have been saying that Brock had the advantage of just being able to make a bunch of "easy" throws. Here's a view from inside one of those throws by the guys who were actually there.

Interestingly, the pass that looked like Purdy's easiest of the afternoon – a 9-yard score to an all-by-himself McCaffrey in the second quarter -- highlighted his smarts and instincts. As McCaffrey ran to the sideline he pointed to Purdy and then pointed his right index finger at the side of the helmet. The message: That took brains. "That wasn't the play," McCaffrey explained.

McCaffrey was supposed to run a different route on a play on which he was what Juszczyk termed him a "last-ditch outlet." But he changed course mid-play when he recognized that he'd been dropped in coverage. As McCaffrey broke outside, freelancing, he raised both hands and Purdy moved off his primary reads. McCaffrey caught the pass at the 3-yard line and jogged into the end zone.

"For him to notice that – that was big," McCaffrey said. "That's an off-script play. That's just Brock's instincts – playing ball." Juszczyk acknowledged that it looked like a pass Joe Fan could complete. But it was an illustration of how Purdy has remained a paint-outside-the-lines artist while becoming a master student.

"It seems easy from the outside when it's like, 'Oh, the guy's wide open. Just hit him,'" Juszczyk said. "But when you've gone through the entire week and every time you run this play, 'It's here (this read) to here to here' -- you're not even thinking about that. Because you don't expect an NFL defense just let a guy run free, especially when it's Christian. So, for him to recognize that and take advantage is big-time."
This is what we've been saying that Mac clearly lacks. He's just not on Brock's level with these things.

That and the off script playmaking is the difference.

Watching Goff against the Eagles last night reinforced the idea that you just aren't gonna win a title with guys who need the scheme to do all the work. Gonna need that off script magic and aggressiveness.

Like late last year and this year so far... he's made mistakes at bad times. Like these are mistakes others would get killed on for not having Quarterback IQ. Situational awareness...etc.

I believe there was a point yesterday where we were up 9pts. (19-10?)... and in FG range. A FG makes it a 12 pt game... so a TD + two pt conversion) + FG wouldn't be enough. They would need two TDs or TD with two FGs.

He almost turned the ball over.

Here is my reaction when it happened, along with everyone else in real time.

Again we got past the Cards. Just have to hope, again, that he learns from it. I just don't like to BS myself with what I see. I see the good, I see the potential, but I also see the obvious (which is the bad).
