I think it has more to do with illegal / online streaming games than it does a disinterested fan base. Sell outs and attendance numbers are as high as they've ever been.

I can speak for myself when I say I probably watch 100 NBA games every season (including playoffs), and not a single one of my views would count in the NBA ratings.
the product just sucks. do ppl enjoy guys just falling away jacking up 3s for an hour or two? i don't. now NBA used to be amazing but that was 80s, 90s, early 2000s era. if i watch hoops it's college hoops now
Ratings down significantly. Revenue up tremendously. NBA don't care.

To each his own. I've been a "fan" for ever but barely watch a handful of reg season games. I just tune in more during the playoffs when the intensity ramps up. Same with MLB - who has time to watch a reg season game. I'll tune in during the actual world series though :)
