Rugby is mainly lateral tackles and hits, getting pulled down from the side or from behind, etc. with the occasional head-on collision (defenders are almost never so out of position by not following the ball/ball carrier that this rarely occurs, where a defender has to get a full running start and attempt to "truck" a carrier dead in his tracks)

Only really purposely designed, direct, head-on contact I can think of occurs in scrums

By contrast, American football are invariably set-piece plays, where two lines of players unavoidably smash into each other (even on mundane run plays), QBs throw the ball forward yards downfield and sometimes "hang" their receivers "out to dry" (i.e., throw too high) and the results are usually defenders can't help due to momentum delivering bone-jarring hits.

Helmets precluded the advent of the forward pass in the history of American football by a couple decades; there had been enough injuries (and some deaths) once American football instituted the system of downs and yards to gain and gameplay evolved from the more fluid rugby-style non-stop action to the more deliberate and set-piece gridiron down & distance style of two teams smashing into each other head-on, that helmets were mandated (IIRC, the outcry for more protective equipment reached all the way to Congress and the president).

Nice little history lesson on Gridiron . Rugby Union, Rugby League, Sevens Rugby, Soccer all evolved from the immortal Pig skin with similar goals in mind....smash each other while getting a ball to the opponents goal.

Whatever the difference today they all have issues with the Officials and technology. And it is killing the love of watching them all. What is a catch in NFL? What is grounding in League? What force does it take to break a soccer players eye lash before they fall down screaming in pain?

And yes, many Aussies still think the NFL players are soft for wearing padding, helmets, gloves, bum rags, leotards, cheat sheet wrist bands, ear pieces, necklaces, rings, ear rings and getting highlights in their dreadlocks. League and Union did away with that stuff years ago although some still have soft padded headgear. (I miss the highlights).

But here we are on a NFL team fan forum. Aussies must like gay men too! NTTIAWWT.
NFL is tougher, the helmets and pads gives them false confidence they are superheros and they produce crazy tackles which are basically the same as two trucks colliding, helmets don't actually protect the players, they use it as a weapon the nutjobs.

Too true. While in Union and league its just the ball carrier that is getting lined up, in NFL its the whole LOS plus ball carrier etc. Even though there are more collisions and rules in NFL there would be more injuries without the padding even if it used as a weapon. Is it any wonder the guys on the LOS have plenty of natural padding as well. But we like taking the pYss outta those septics. Mostly good but a whole lotta crazy.
