Swiss authorities have arrested several top FIFA officials on federal corruption charges in Zurich and plan to extradite them to the United States, according to reports.
The New York Times says that more than a dozen plain-clothed Swiss law enforcement officials arrived unannounced at the Baur au Lac hotel in the early hours of Wednesday morning as leaders of FIFA gathered for their annual meeting.
The charges allege that there has been widespread corruption throughout football's governing body over the past 20 years, involving bids for World Cups as well as marketing and broadcast deals.

I knew the US didn't win the world cup last year for reasons outside of our control.

Read one of the articles and got as far as the part where it wouldn't change the World Cup being in Qatar and Russia.
Stopped at that point.

this. ESPN radio this morning said, we all knew for years FIFA was corrupt. We all just thought its how they do business. They were surprised someone actually did something about it.

so, some American guy got caught? i'm hearing on ESPN that it was an American dude, and through him they were able to get at other of these officials. supposedly the guy has been getting payed under the table for many years, and was telling the government he wasn't getting any income, even though he had a nice house and cars.

From what I read they busted a dude a couple years back and he became an informer. That allowed them to trace the 10 other officials who were just arrested. Details are still sketchy at this point, but that was CNN's timeline
