They pick their own guys who have a borderline shot at the all-star game. All the coaches do this.

I've heard the "he deserves it, but won't make it" thing a lot. I actually agree with that. I think he is definitely an all star this year, but around the league he isn't liked. And that is his fault. He has a bad rep and he earned that. But, that shouldn't preclude coaches for not voting him in as a reserve. He has been a straight beast.
More than they don't like him..coaches tend to lean towards older legendary players and they feel that a young player will have a shot to make it next year. Also, record also makes a difference. Even though I completely agree with you that it shouldn't.
