this. Monta in that system would dominate.

Lakers can't do a sign & trade because they're in luxury tax territory. Broussard's an extremely lazy reporter.

So, Lakers can't do sign & trade involving Dwight either?

I should have been more clear. They can't receive a player via sign & trade. They could sign & trade Dwight elsewhere, provided that none of the players that they received in return were signed & traded.

How do they define sign and trade? So if say Milwaukee signs Monta to an extension, then happens to trade him to the Lakers like 5 days later is that allowed?

Pretty sure there's an amount of time that has to go by before a player gets traded after recieving an extension unless its a sign and trade

Technically, an extension means that a player is under contract for the upcoming year, so if Monta extended his contract, it would mean that he decided to opt in to the final year of his current deal. In that case, Monta could be traded to the Lakers this offseason. (he's said he's opting out though)
If Monta were to opt out, become an Unrestricted Free Agent, and then re-sign with Milwaukee, he could not be traded anywhere until January 15th, 2014.

Ya, knowing the exact date when a re-signed NBA player can be traded has a lot of practical uses in my life. You should see how the panties fly when I explain revenue sharing.
