NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State

CBS News has learned that the NCAA will announce what a high-ranking association source called "unprecedented" penalties against both the Penn State University football team and the school. "I've never seen anything like it," the source told correspondent Armen Keteyian.

NCAA President Mark Emmert will make the announcement Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the organization's headquarters in Indianapolis.

The penalties come in the wake of the independent report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that chronicled repeated efforts by four top Penn State officials, including former football coach Joe Paterno, to conceal allegations of serial child sex abuse by Jerry Sandusky over a 14-year period.

The NCAA had been awaiting the school's response to four key questions pertaining to the sex abuse scandal, including issues involving institutional control and ethics.

this is already talked about in the sandusky thread
The thing that is stupid about NCAA penalties like this is they punish people who weren't around when the incidents happened. JoePa is dead, Sandusky in jail, the admins long since fired... Harsh penalties on the school won't punish any1 who was responsible for this.
No Death Penalty though..will face though

Probation
Loss of Football Scholarships
Ban on Bowl Games &
A Hefty Fine

These are not unprecedented penalties unless it is all scholarships for multiple years, ban on bowl games for 4-5 years.
no death penalty

exactly..if they do end up punishing the program harshly then the student athletes should get the right to transfer and be eligable to play

One sicko shouldn't ruin it for a whole football program. The players didnt do anything. Sandusky will be in jail for the rest of his life and Joe Paterno is dead. The 2 guys that should be punished are gone, I dont get what good this is going to do. Its not going to do anything or punish whoever was involved in this, all those guys are gone. Punishing the school isn't going to make sure a sicko doesn't rape kids again, like I said, the people that should've been punished are gone. Anyone who was responsible for what happened is gone
Right now they're just going to punish people that weren't responsible for what happened.. I dont think its logical

The penalties, however, are considered to be so harsh that the death penalty may have been preferable, the source said.

Seems like an easy way for an institution to get out of punishment.

Pete Carroll, Mike Garrett, Reggie Bush...all of the responsible parties involved in the USC scandal were gone by the time the sanctions hit. It still doesn't mean that the institution shouldn't be held liable for damages.

Hell, you're a lawyer. You know all about vicarious liability.

Said this morning that if the bowl ban is 3 years then So., Jr, and Sr can transfer and play immediately for another team.
If I'm reading their roster correctly they only have 1 player that's a true freshman
